He does it again! Amazing!

Another truly beautiful romance brought to us back Erik Schubach! I received the email while at work and I took an early lunch to start the book! I couldn't put it down and I was quickly brought into their world! I finished it as SOON as I got home!
I quickly fell in love with Robin and loved her outlook on the world. The way that Brandye explains colors and the world around her to Robin is amazing!

It was a beautiful romance and I loved, of course, seeing my favorite characters from the previous books. :)

Highly recommended to all!

Another Great Entry for a Venerable Series

"Girl Next Door" is the latest offering from Erik Schubach in his now venerable Music of the Soul series. The book focuses on the budding romance between Brandye and Robin. One a student, the other a painter. One with sight, the other without.

The book spans a three year period from the time the women meet to the time they (finally!) realize they have feelings for each other. While this three year span is unusual in romance stories (at least the ones I've read) for this story, for these characters, it works.

One peeve I have with Mr. Schubach's style is his tendency to skip over dialogue between characters. This isn't as much of a problem in this book as it has been in past books, like "Broken Song" where the main characters are joined by a lot of the characters from previous books (and where Brandye is first introduced, as she is the daughter of Penny Franklin, one of the main characters from that work).

During a dinner party, the author missed a golden opportunity, from my perspective, to see Reese Qualls (from "Five Feet or Less") talking with Penny Franklin (from "Broken Song") and Blake Reston (from "Silent Bob"), while Skylar Roth (from "Karaoke Queen") talked with Annabella West from "Music of the Soul," the first book in the series.

Dialogue between these women would've been very interesting to read, as it would also give the author a chance to further develop these characters. This is, I guess, a bit of a pipe dream to me. A lot of these characters are my favorite characters not only from this series, but from other books from the lesbian romance genre.

One of the very positive things about Mr. Schubach's writing style is he focuses on the *romance* between the characters and not the sex. In fact, there have been no real sex scenes in any of his books that I can immediately recall. This is one area where I am pleased he doesn't go into more detail. It's rare enough to find a male writer who writes good lesbian-themed romance; most of the offerings are very poorly written excuses to indulge the fantasies of 12 year old boys everywhere. Most doesn't come close to being erotica, just badly written pornography.

Mr. Schubach, as I said, doesn't have this issue. He seems to get that the *romance* is what's important. The slow build up to a satisfying ending is what his readers want and enjoy. I hesitate to make this comparison, but the "Music of the Soul" books are the epitome of literary foreplay to a satisfying climax between the author and the reader.

Once again Erik Schubach has gifted us with another wonderful book! This book had it all great humor, great characters, and a great storyline! I cannot wait for more!!! Keep writing Erik you have a gift, if you have not read his books you should I have read them all I highly recommend this author. Coming from someone who reads at least 200 lesfic books a year (I know I am addicted) read his books!

A very good overview of the work of one of America's great photographers

Walker Evans was the first photographer to capture my attention and esteem. Over the years I have accumulated a half dozen books of his photographs. WALKER EVANS: FIRST AND LAST is one of the least known of the Walker Evans photography books (this is the first Amazon review of it), but in some respects it is one of the best.

The book contains 219 photographs. They span Evans's career, from 1929 to 1973. Included are some of his most famous images. All in all, the book serves as a fine introduction to Evans. Perhaps the best feature in that regard is that there is very little commentary -- a three-sentence publisher's note on the first page and the blurbs on the rear cover. The reader is simply presented the photographs, via reproductions of above-average quality, and left to formulate her own opinions without any critical or explanatory intermediation to prejudge the matter. (At the end of the volume, there is a listing of bare-bones information for each photograph, including year taken and size of the original negative.)

The photographs are in rough but not precise chronological order. By and large, there is one photograph per page. Often the juxtaposition of facing photographs is witty or insightful, with shared motifs or some sort of symbiotic byplay.

Evans was not a nature photographer à la Ansel Adams. Though not a documentary social critic in the manner of W. Eugene Smith or Dorothea Lange, Evans focused on people, their artifacts, and their living conditions. (Evans himself described his work as "still photography of a general sociological nature.") FIRST AND LAST contains a representative sampling of the more common subjects or themes of Evans's, such as buildings (commonplace buildings rather than showpieces); signs, in all their commercial and utilitarian variety; company towns and housing; cityscapes and townscapes (in which overhead electrical lines proliferate); and the interiors of homes, usually humble. Most of all, people: the now-iconic pictures of Alabama sharecroppers from "Let Us Now Praise Famous Men"; portraits of the famous and (were it not for the brief moment of time when Evans shot and developed his photograph) the long forgotten; subway portraits; as well as street portraits from Chicago and Detroit.

I just conducted a quick internet search (including but not limited to the reseller listings on Amazon) of offerings of WALKER EVANS: FIRST AND LAST, and I found at least ten copies in decent condition -- some hardcover, some paperback -- for $25 or less. At that price, the book is an excellent purchase, whether it is your first or your sixth book of Evans's photographs.

About the Author

Marc Marschark is a Professor at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, where he is Director of the Center for Education Research Partnerships. He has written or edited over 20 books and published over 100 articles and chapters. His current research focuses on relations of language and learning by deaf children and adults in formal and informal educational settings.

Peter C. Hauser is an Associate Professor at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf. A deaf clinical neuropsychologist, he is the director of the Deaf Studies Laboratory (DSL) where he supervises deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing students who obtain hands-on experience developing, running, and analyzing experimental psychological studies.

A "Must Read" for professionals, educators and parents connected to the world of Deafness

It is a breath of fresh air to read a book dealing with the education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing children based on research instead of dogma, habits, fanaticism, or just simply "personal beliefs." Who ever it was that encouraged these authors to re-write their research conclusions in a manner that parents and teachers can understand, deserves a medal. As do the authors themselves. Without a doubt, even more research needs to be done in this field, but the authors clearly reveal where conclusions cannot be made until that research is attempted, yet suggest what makes sense based on the research available. As a teacher who has been working with the deaf for over 30 years, I am finding that this book supports many things I have come to believe over the course of my career, and shines a light on new findings in a way I can not only understand, but can take a hold of and bring into my practice.

Clarifies the Misconceptions Well.

8/12: Well, How Deaf Children Learn is as neutral as it gets when it comes to the presentment of evidence based information in terms of what's best for the deaf children. It is actually a nice treatment, but if you are going to find answers, chances are you will end up feeling disappointed or nonplused. I am actually glad to see that neither signing nor speaking is better than one another. Both have their uses, and both serve their purposes very well. But to think one without the other, it's impossible. It helps to have both in the arsenal, and I should know. The authors came very, very close to settling a question but didn't. This is a new research proposal. As I have a lot of experience across the board no matter what placement, this is how I feel: deaf children who only sign and live primarily in the deaf community tend to have ADHD traits, and deaf children who either rely on simcom or are strongly oral living primarily in the hearing world tend to have the traits of Asperger's syndrome. The behaviors are discernable and have a lot of similarities with the respective disorders. Now, my question is: does the deafness mold the traits or are they inherent regardless of the deafness? This is something that will be very interesting. There is a statement in the book that "there is no evidence, however, to support claims that television captions, texting, and the Internet improve deaf students' reading." I'll agree with it to a certain extent. Closed captions is the primarily reason why I initially got good in reading, and then of course, my reading level will plateau if I stayed with it only instead of branching out like reading classics, etc. But still, I must say that there are positives in closed captions. My biggest agreement with the chief message of the entire book is that parental involvement does make the most difference in making or breaking the deaf child's future. That I can attest and back it up. On the other hand, I can never believe how a seemingly normal person who happens to be deaf can be so saddled with 3rd to 4th grade reading, mathematics, and writing levels coming out of high school. I've met so many who are just the perfect model of my description. Then again, the fluency of language is the reason why. Although the challenges of schooling from preschool to high school remain tough for the deaf population, I have to say that the transition from school to real life is much tougher because jobs are there but no willing employers taking the chance. All in all, How Deaf Children Learn addresses most of the crucial issues, settles them, and offers perspectives but doesn't solve the dilemma.

That would be 20 songs for around 50 cents a song when the book is on sale; not bad. I tried out about four of them to give an idea of difficulty and harmonics. The level is most close to intermediate; advanced players may find these too easy technically. However, there is a level of difficulty for the player to make the piano sing the melody in a pleasing and/or moving fashion. Silent Night is an acid test because there isn't much harmonic variety in the song as written. The arrangement here adds a little color without straying too far from the familiar. In some arrangements, however, the harmonic resolutions were not as good as they should be; there are obvious attempts to surprise the ear by adding unexpected chords that then do not fold back in very smoothly. In such instances I'm not afraid to alter the chord progression to a more pleasing result.

Compared to the Steinway 'Great Standards' series......

If you have any of the Steinway "Piano Stylings of the Great Standards" series and are expecting that same level of invention and difficulty in these Christmas arrangements, you won't find it. Although some of the same arrangers are featured, the selections are much easier - probably intermediate at best - and shorter (most, two to three pages). I agree with the reviewer who, noting the simplicity of the source material, questioned some of the more adventurous chord substitutions. Some of the chord choices are too striking and need to be rewritten a bit closer to the original harmony so as not to seem too pretentious.

That said, I'm using all or part of several of these arrangements but combining them into medleys with some changes to make transitions smooth. Considering the usual tired reworking of Christmas favorites, these are definitely more interesting than most.

I'd recommend buying the book because it's reasonably priced for the arrangers' skill and number of titles.

this is good to have for all families who child wants to play music. I used it to help teach my nephew music and he can play a couple of songs now. I love it because it has all my favorite songs in it.

My children love this math series!

I wasn't sure if I liked how this author approached math - it seemed so 'untraditional'. But the proof is in the pudding. My children love this series, and actually argue who gets to do math next! I supplement with flashcards and some Khan academy as well. I also use Teaching Textbooks, but I plan to buy every single Life of Fred book for them because it is their favorite math and helps with the concepts.

Side note: this particular copy (Cats) was printed upside down in the cover. Not a big deal, I just turn the book over to read it, but thought I would make a note.

Great Resource :: Multiple Reads

A great resource for learning math. The books will be passed from child to child, and each book can (and almost certainly will) be read many times -- for learning and for enjoyment of learning.

My son loves these books. A very unique perspective. I only give it it 4 stars because for the price it is expensive. You will go through the book in a month and be ready for the next one.
