Very good book
By PearlGirl
I have been reading the for Dummies series for years. I have to admit that I miss the cartoons that would start each chapter or section. Still, the book is full of great ideas for walking, even in tight places like a small apartment. I know I sit too much and I need all the motivation I can get. This book includes diet information to augment the exercise, so I can eat right. One thing that did bother me was the chapter declaring walking as a cure for certain diseases. I don't think the book should have made that claim, but walking could certainly help with recuperation and rehab. Overall, this book is filled with good information to get started on a sensible and useful walking program.

Excellent in every respect.
By Russell Fanelli
My guess is that at least some readers of this review are like me - asking the question, do I have to continue with my gym membership to get good exercise? The answer is no. Ditch the gym membership and start walking. Thousands of Internet articles attest to the fact that walking is one of the finest exercises we can do for ourselves throughout our lives. If you don't believe me, check it out for yourself on Bing or Google.

When I saw on Amazon the book Walking the Weight Off for Dummies, I said, That's for me, dummy!" This decision is a good one; Erin Palinski-Wade's book is excellent in every respect. It is our encyclopedia of walking in one volume. She has tried to be complete and she has succeeded.

That point about this book being an encyclopedia of walking is a good place to start this review because everyone should know up front that it is not necessary to read the entire book, which is divided into twenty chapters. Think of it; twenty chapters on walking. Is that possible? Yes, but few of will need to read all twenty chapters.

I suggest starting at the beginning. The first chapters gave me the information and motivation to start a walking program. A key point for me in the first chapter was goal setting. Erin points out that we need a clear target for our walking program if we are going to be successful. Our goals should be smart - specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time framed. The smarter our goals, the more likely it is that we will achieve them.

Chapter two tells us many of the good things walking can do for us like: 1. Sharpen our minds; 2. Ward off dementia; 3. Increase flexibility; 4. Improve posture; 5. Improve bone and joint health; 6. Strengthen our immune system; 7. Reduce anxiety and stress. This list is just a start, but it is an impressive start.

In Chapter three, How Walking Sheds Pounds, Erin gives us specific recommendations for what we should do to burn more calories on our walks. I immediately applied three suggestions to my daily walks. First, I used my stop watch to make sure that I walked at least thirty minutes. Next, I included the valuable interval training as part of the walk - that is, five minutes at a normal pace, then five minutes at a much faster pace, and so on. Lastly, I made sure I included hills in the walk to increase the difficulty level of the walk and burn off more calories. Again, this is just a start. This chapter is filled with outstanding suggestions I have yet to try. For example, Erin suggests buying a pedometer. I thought, great, until I went to Amazon to find one that didn't get lots of one star reviews. Anyone reading this review that has suggestion for a good pedometer to buy, please leave a comment. Thanks.

Chapter 4, Hitting the Road, discusses all the places suitable for walking - and the list is long. Erin wants us to ditch our car and walk everywhere we can at home, at work, at the supermarket, at the mall - you name it. It's all walking and it's all good. I live in Western MA and last winter we had temperatures as low as minus twenty below zero; it actually hurt to go outside. Erin is realistic; she knows that it is not healthy to be out in such weather, particularly when the wind is blowing. She suggests walking right in our own house, upstairs and downstairs, or on a treadmill if we decide to buy one. We have huge malls not far from our house and lots of people walk the malls when the weather gets too bad to be outside.

My guess is that readers of this review are now saying, "OK, I've got the idea that this book is going to answer most of my questions about walking." You are correct. This is a book that will not find its way onto my library bookshelves. This book is now standing next to my walking shoes in the back hall ready to remind me to keep walking and to seek out new information to help me make my walks more productive. Thanks, Erin, for a job well done.

Lots of information!
By D. Mckinzie
Like all the "Dummies" books that I've seen, this one has almost more information than you can process and the more you know about the subject, the better it helps you. However, this one does have a lot of great information for those who haven't been walking a lot (or even exercising) and want to get started. The section I really enjoyed was about walking indoors, since I have heat-triggered asthma and I'm basically trapped inside all summer and it's hard to get much exercise unless you buy expensive equipment or join a health club, neither of which I can afford right now. There were some interesting ideas about how to get in some extra walking indoors without spending money and without going to a lot of trouble. But there is also a lot of info about how to buy the right shoes, how to get started, things to look out for, and many other topics. I think the name isn't the best choice, though, because it doesn't really have to be "walking the weight off". If your weight is already okay, you can benefit health-wise by walking because it tones your leg muscles, gets you breathing deeper and has other health benefits. The book goes into a lot of that, too.
