Charlie Garrett was never sure of his place during his Atlanta childhood. His dad died in Vietnam before he was born; he always felt like a guest in his stepfather’s wealthy family. It is only as a young teacher at the shabby-genteel Abbott School in Massachusetts that he can finally find himself. He begins his reinvention, falling in love with May Bankhead, the school chaplain’s beautiful daughter, and leading a charmed life—until he breaks both her heart and his own. May leaves Abbottsford, he thinks forever.
Nearly a decade later, the fragile peace that Charlie has built is shattered by the arrival of his golden-boy half brother—and the return of his first love. Trying to set things right, Charlie pushes his brother and May together, inadvertently creating a triangle of secrets, regrets, and desires, that threatens to consume them all.

I wanted to like this book but kept being irritated by it
By Virginia 46
I wanted to like this book but kept being irritated by it. The language, which at first seems lyrical, eventually begins to feel overwrought and tedious--but maybe the only thing holding the book together. The characters' motivations made no sense to me. And who couldn't foresee the big revelation about Charlie's mysterious paternity--and then the writer pulls the same trick a second time? Please.

A Well-Crafted Love Story
By Annie
I very much enjoyed this unusual telling of a love story. The narrator Charlie Garrett is a Southerner teaching English at a boarding school in Massachusetts who falls in love with the school chaplain's daughter and dates her for a time after she is graduated. The narrative focuses on tCharlie's relationship with May, with of his family -a half-brother named Nick and their mother Anita - and friends and colleagues in closely-knit school community.
Charlie insists on his own ordinariness but revelation in mystery novel style of an extraordinary fact upsets his tightly-scripted reality and eventually the reader's understanding of Charlie. Though in retelling the tale from the narrator sometimes hints at turns in the plot ahead, I found myself having to continually reinterpret, as the characters' did, past interactions (and paragraphs), in light of new information. Charlie's road is bent in the undergrowth, a path never clear and straight.
In the end Charlie, who in many ways has been trying to control his adult life as the author of a well-crafted narrative, in understanding his origins comes of age in his late 30s. Along the way LeCraw paints accurately and with lovely detail small scenes of life growing up in the South, of high school, of winter in the northeast and primarily complicated dynamics among family and friends, understanding and love.

ANGST, ANGST, AND MORE ANGST
By William Maltese
Yes, I did find it ironic that after my finishing THE SKELETON ROAD and insinuating in my review of same (only three days ago), that I was weary of books with academia settings, that I should find myself reading Holly LeCraw’s THE HALF BROTHER, all about the search for personal identity, family, loyalty, and love, mainly set within the environs of a New England boarding school.
In the end, though, despite a death scene that made me uncomfortable because of how clearly it struck home, recalling memories of my own mother’s death that I was loathe to remember, this tale, of a complicated love triangle between two half-bothers and the daughter of the school chaplain, managed to hold my interest, in imitation of authors, like Pat Conroy (who has a truly genuine skill in dissecting characters and family relationships).
There are some surprises along the way to keep things interesting, and, a plot twist, near the end, that seems a tad too convenient for this reader, but I’d recommend this book to anyone interested in a work, hardly uplifting, depicting imperfect characters, with all their warts and scars, more often than not bogged down with angst well-deserved and otherwise.
