The immense and enduring success of the Piano Concerto No. 2, completed in 1901, has made this romantic work one of the most performed and recorded in the concerto literature and one of the most familiar compositions in all of music. The powerful and expressive Piano Concerto No. 3 was composed for a concert tour of America, during which Rachmaninoff appeared with great success as composer, pianist, and conductor. Like the first two concertos, it remains a repertoire favorite in concert halls around the world.
All three acclaimed works are reprinted in this finely made yet remarkably inexpensive Dover edition. Musicians and music lovers will find it a convenient single-volume source from which to study intimately three major works of the twentieth century.

A caveat regarding the First Concerto

Buy this score for the Second or Third concertos, not the First.

Dover has made a serious mistake in reprinting what it claims is a 1960s Russian printing of the First Piano Concerto. The edition here simply isn't the standard version of the 1917 revision of the concerto. At the same time, it isn't the original version, either. Structurally, it seems to be identical to the revised version, but much of the piano figuration (I'm unsure about the orchestral part) is based on the original version. I have no idea how this hybrid came about - perhaps it was compiled from an intermediate version in the revision process, or perhaps it was created by the publisher. At any rate, it's not much use in studying the modern version of this concerto.

Boosey has published the First Concerto together with the Second. This score (ISBN 9780851624440) is excellent, highly readable, and available at a very reasonable price from this site here.

Amazing!

The Rachmaninoff Piano Concertos are among the hardest ever written. This book does a good job of showing the composer's intentions. Its inclusion of the ossia version as well as the simplified version of the solo part helps the reader to compare the two. Also, the orchestra parts are easily read and well spaced. There is never too much or too little on one page. It is a great book for conductors, pianists, or anyone else who loves the Rach concerti. This is a must have for any serious piano concerto fan!

What to say...This book contains the 3 most beautiful peace of music ever written;if you had the luck to listen to them you'll know why. And if you're a musician, you'll want to play them (or at least a part of them, since they're treacherous hard to play..).And what's the best way to fully understand a concert in its greatness, if not the full score? Maybe somebody can think that the notes are a little tiny, but I personally find them perfectly clear, with the ossias, too.

If you're a real musician, you'll love this wonderful product!

About the Author
Drazen Marovic is a grandmaster from Croatia, who has won medals as both player and trainer for various national teams. His pupils include Bojan Kurajica, World Under-20 Champion in 1965, and Al Modiahki of Qatar, the first Arabian Grandmaster. Marovic has a wealth of experience as a writer, editor, and television commentator on chess. He is currently the trainer of the Croatian national team.

Heir to Soltis

Having read the classic manual Pawn Structure Chess by Soltis, I was very interested to see how this book would stack up. I learned a lot from Soltis, and I hoped to expand my understanding about how pawn structures affect plans and strategy. I was not disappointed. Marovic uses many, many complete game examples, but his annotations are so succinct and clear as to make the large number of games effortless to get through. One thing he does well which is VERY hard for most chess authors is present the model games in a sequence in which their respective lessons build upon one another to deeply reinforce the concepts he's trying (and succeeding) to instruct. The one caveat, if you want to call it that, is that I think this book will be most helpful for people with an intermediate knowledge of openings, as the pawn positions discussed tend to reoccur in specific openings with specific piece placements. However, this shouldn't be a problem as I believe the intended audience is above 1600 USCF anyway, and should thus know the difference between a QGA and a QGD.

Great book for the advanced amateur

This book uses complete games to examine pawn structures--their strengths and weaknesses. Marovic uses a conversational tone to explain important points and keeps analysis to the minimum needed to illustrate the explanation. In separate chapters he examines isolated pawns, passed pawns, doubled pawns, backward pawns and pawn-chains.

Marovic uses games from throughout the history of chess to illustrate his material and does a great job. I would recommend this book for players rated (USCF) from Class B and up, although rapidly advancing lower rated players would also benefit from reading the book as well.

The only thing that could make it better would be a few more diagrams.

A classic - Every serious chess player should buy this book

Traditionally chess books are often grouped in the categories: opening, middle game and ending. Marovic's book "Understanding pawn play in chess" covers a very important topic in chess, which includes all the three phases of a game. It will help you little if you know the moves in the French opening, but you don't know how to handle the pawn chain from a French opening. Means how to attack the wedge and the base of the pawn chain. "Understanding pawn play in chess" will help you to do understand what to do with pawn chain. So if you want to extend your knowledge about pawn structures this is the book for you. The topics covered in this book are: isolated pawns, isolated pawn couples, hanging pawns, passed, doubled, backward, pawn chains and pawn islands.

One Minus with this book, is that the author and Gambitbooks could have used more diagrams for each game. You must always use the board when going through this book. With more diagrams describing the most interesting position for the pawn subject, the book would become more readable.

Edwin Morris Betts (1892-1958) was professor of biology at the University of Virginia for thirty-one years. He first became interested in Jefferson's gardening and farming pursuits while studying the trees Jefferson imported from abroad for planting on the grounds of the University. He really enjoyed the book! He commented/discussed it with several other people. It is written much like a diary or journal, so I thought it might be a bit tedious to read, but he liked it and that's what counts :)

I consider Thomas Jefferson to be one of earliest masters of gardening-among other things. So any book relating to his life and works is worth owning. I thank the publishers for taking a chance and printing up these chapters for the general public to be able to view and use. About the Author
Dan Furst was born in New York. He has worked as an award-winning actor, singer, music and theatre producer, astrologer and ceremonial artist in New York, Japan, Hawaii, India, Egypt and Peru. He travels extensively, and his public speeches and festival performances in the Americas, Europe and the Mideast have made him one of the world’s most respected authorities on the astrology of our awakening into Aquarian spiritual consciousness. For the last ten years, since he began specializing in astrocartography, his life has been an ongoing experiment in living, building relationships and traveling under his best lines, and tough ones too, to test firsthand which pieces of astrocartography lore ring true, and which ones still need work. Bummed About the Actual Content

This book is very well written, but I was somewhat disappointed. When I read the title, I thought I was getting a book I could read and learn how to DO the astrocartography myself. Instead, after reading this book, I know all about why you'd want to use a map, information about the underlying astrology, and lots of stories about how individual's lives were transformed when they moved to various places correlating with their own personal maps. But, I still have NO clue what my own personal map would look like, and feel like I wasted some of my time.

For anyone going through change in their lives, Finding Your Best Places will give you insights and facts to validate your intuitive feelings. Dan came along in my life when I was contemplating retiring and moving to a new location. The astrocartography reading he provided gave me the impetus to move forward in my life with confident decisions. Having been three plus years in retirement now, the energetic lines influencing my life now feel right for my new lifestyle and the burgeoning multilevel business I have started.

A second astrocartography reading I recently received from Dan addressed where to focus my efforts to best grow my business. This is the kind of information one might pay top dollar to receive and probably not be as helpful as what I received from Dan. Who can argue with Universal Laws governing this science? If I have learned anything in my 72 years of life, besides listening to my wife’s advice, it is to not swim upstream in life; that is, to not work against the universal energies that have been hardwired into my life path this go-around.

This book, as far as I know, is a one-of-a-kind that unveils the mystique surrounding this esoteric science. It adds a dimension to astrology that few have ventured to go.
