Scholarly essays on teaching basic writing

"Basic writing" in this context means teaching college writing to students who are not deemed ready for freshman composition. I bought this book for a graduate course. It's a good collection, but if you're doing research you'll want to get your hands on some more recent essays as well.

Loved it! Wish it was longer!

I read a previous review on this story and almost didn't bother with because of it, but I'm glad I decided to disregard it and read it anyway. I have to say, yes, the circumstances may be a little far fetched, but keep in mind, it's all fantasy and that's what good fiction is all about! I enjoyed the short story and would have preferred that it be fleshed out a bit more (pardon the pun), not because I didn't like it, but because I think this would be a great start to something longer and more drawn out, like a full length novel or novella at the very least.

As a writer myself I know how hard it is to write good stories and I'm sorry, but I have to STRONGLY disagree with the previous review and say that Alexandrinha (sorry if I misspelled that, but that name is a mouthful) Abbot writes a good story, just wish she'd write them a little longer and delve a little deeper into what motivates her characters. Either way, a good bit of fluff (again, pardon the pun, but as a BBW myself, I can use them if I want!) and a great quick read!

Knight in Shining Armor???

have several book by this author and I have not been disappointed yet. I own just about all of her books. This was a very interesting and quick read.

Jennifer is working as a waitress at this party that is been held by Michael. She bumps into to him while carrying a tray a champagne. Michael turns out to be her knight in shining armor in more way then one.

I would recommend this book to others.

The author did a beautiful job writing this story. It has a little romance, a little humiliation, and an unexpected surprise. I really enjoyed it. However, there wasn't any mention of a continuation. I do hope to see one soon.

BIOGRAPHY Mark Maxwell, JA Certified Master Bench Jeweler Owner, Maxwell CAD A simple high school silversmithing class led to a lifelong passion for goldsmithing, a formal education, and a professional career. After receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the State University of New York at New Paltz, Mark began designing jewelry for a prominent jewelry store in Pennsylvania. Then, in 1997, Mark joined the Gemological Institute of America as a lead jewelry design and manufacturing instructor. But Mark's passion for teaching is equaled by his passion for learning and he was invited to study the art of hand engraving under the personal tutelage of Martin Strolz in Austria. In 2002, Mark earned the distinction of becoming a Jewelers of America Certified Master Bench Jeweler. And in September 2008, Mark decided to pursue his dream of designing and manufacturing his own jewelry collection under the Mark Maxwell Designer Goldsmith brand. Shortly after launching his own business, Mark was named one of Centurion’s Emerging Designers and introduced his jewelry collection at the Centurion trade show. Mark's unique hand engraved enamel jewelry collection soon earned praise – and press. Mark has been featured in magazines including, Modern Jeweler, JCK, and National Jeweler. Perfect for the intermediate to advanced jeweler!

This is a great book for the intermediate to advanced bench jeweler. So many "how to" jewelry books out there spend half the book or more on basic tools and knowledge for the beginner that I'm sure jewelers like myself get annoyed at and a bit bored through most of those books. Mark throws you right in and walks you through a bunch of different projects, detailing each step along with great close up pictures. I look forward to trying out many of them on my own bench! I'm very honored to say that Mark was one of my teachers while I attended GIA's Graduate Jeweler program, he is a true master at what he does and very talented. I hope he continues with more bench books in the future! DON'T PASS THIS BOOK UP!

Buy this book!!!

What a fantastic book. I have searched and searched for a book that would teach me more advanced and useful techniques. As soon as I opened it and read the intro I knew it was the book for me. A book about giving back to all of the bench jewelers out there. It's so refreshing to see such a master taking the time to teach his knowledge. Definitely get this book. It's easy to follow and clearly laid out. A hands down choice in my book.

I really loved this book

I really loved this book! It fills a needed spot for intermediate to advanced skills in fabrication. You won't find instructions on HOW to solder or HOW to set stones, it's assumed you have already acquired these skills. You will find the step by step order of operations with clear photographs for complicated projects and more importantly the WHY behind design and construction details. The chapters in this book cover piercing, forging, filing, soldering, ring shanks, hinges & catches (my favorite! I wish someone would write an entire book on this subject.) and some information on mixing CAD/CAM with more traditional techniques. By attempting all of the projects it would be hard not to improve your skills as a goldsmith. With the books soft cover and smaller size it's easy to keep on the bench when working.

It argues instead that many of its problems are due to an under-achieved relationship between a patriarchal state on the one hand, and weak professional nursing organisations shaped by their colonial roots on the other. It also explores how the recent phenomenon of large-scale emigration of nurses to the West (leading to better pay, working conditions and career prospects) has transformed the profession, lifting its status dramatically. At the same time, it raises questions about the implications of emigration for the fate of health care system in India.

An important contribution to the growing academic genre of nursing history, the book is essential reading for scholars and students of health care, the history of medicine, gender and women’s studies, sociology, and migration studies. It's a fun series except for the fact that it ends abruptly and the writer hasn't put out another chapter. It's frustrating to read a series and find out that you either have to wait for the next book or the writer has given up and you never know what happens. I'm hoping that she puts out at least one more to tie it up.
