Dairy consumption in Asia has more than doubled over the last 25 years, and has led to more than 50% of the world’s total dairy imports now entering Asian markets. Consequently, Asian countries are seeking to improve their self-sufficiency in dairy produce by developing their local milk industries.

Asian livestock importers are looking for increasing numbers of high grade dairy stock from established dairy industries in countries such as Australia and New Zealand. Unfortunately, a major problem encountered throughout Asia has been the poor performance of these exotic high grade dairy heifers when exported from their country of origin to a new, more stressful environment. This has been due to a failure to prepare for their introduction. Exotic dairy cows, particularly those from farms with high levels of herd performance, have high management requirements. If subjected to local and traditional small holder dairy farm practices, they are unlikely to produce acceptable yields of milk or may not even get back into calf. Poor management practices can lead to low growth rates, delayed breeding, stock diseases and even deaths among imported stock both before and after first calving.

Managing High Grade Dairy Cows in the Tropics addresses the entire range of management practices found on tropical small holder dairy farms, highlighting those which are likely to adversely impact on heifer and cow performance, hence farm profitability. It is a companion volume to two previous manuals written by John Moran: Tropical Dairy Farming and Business Management for Tropical Dairy Farmers.

About the Author
John Moran is a consultant with Profitable Dairy Systems, located in Kyabram, Victoria. His specialist fields include dairy production, ruminant nutrition, calf and heifer rearing, forage conservation and whole farm business management. In 2013, he was appointed as the Coordinator of the Asia Dairy Network, an international agency position to facilitate communication and collaboration of dairy industries from 15 countries throughout South and East Asia. Since 1999, he has initiated and conducted training programs on small holder dairy production to farmers, advisers and policy makers in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, China, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and East Timor. His books include Tropical Dairy Farming, Calf Rearing, Heifer Rearing and Forage Conservation, and he has also published more than 200 research and extension articles and written several farmer manuals on cattle nutrition.

3rd Ed comming in 2015

As previous poster said the new 3rd edition is to be released in 2015. DO NOT GET PRICE GOUGED BY THESE SELLERS!! The new copy will have all color print while this 2nd ed is black and white. Unless this is a must have now wait until Cornell finishes the publication of the 3rd edition.

*UPDATE* - Cornell has dropped the ball again on the publishing date. They now expect to release the new edition in 2016.

Simply Wonderful

The folks at Cornell have done it again. This is a huge book, packed full of information, but it is also a joy to read. Even though it supplies plenty of the "encyclopedic" material, it's a bit reminiscent of David Attenborough's "Life of Birds" DVD, in that it highlight some of the "gee-whiz" aspects of birds, such as egg mimicry, artistic bower construction, lymphatic penises in ducks, and so forth. There was a surprising section on nocturnal birding by ear, which I had never seen addressed. They seem to have covered every topic and then some.

If you have only a casual interest in birds, this book may be overkill, but if you are a birder or ornithology student I'm sure you'll enjoy deepening your appreciation and understanding of birds with the help of this book.

Overpriced out of print, wait for 3rd ed

Just FYI, I have only flipped through this book briefly and do not actually own a copy, though I would very much like to.

However, the current prices offered by third party sellers on this site and others are tremendously inflated. While the book is no longer in print, it was originally sold new by Cornell for $100. Obviously, prices like $300 for a used copy are a bit exorbitant. However, Cornell IS working on a 3rd edition that they will sell, so if you can wait, you will once again be able to purchase this book at a reasonable price sometime in the future.

Democracy's past, present...and future

Like everything else, democracy has a beginning, a present, and a future.

George Novack's Democracy and Revolution will be a big help to the growing number of working people and youth who want to do something effective because they understand that as capitalism enters a deepening social and economic crisis-the prognosis for the health of democracy in the U.S. and elsewhere is already showing symptoms of prolonged illness.

Novack, an outstanding Marxist scholar and revolutionary activist who wrote some 16 books before his death in 1992, presents an accurate diagnosis and useful political prescription for those who want to defend (and extend into the economic and social sphere) these ailing democratic rights against the capitalist politicians of both the Democratic and Republican parties who today are attacking democracy "in order to save it."

Novack explains that, "Democracy was everywhere the offspring of revolution." Its origins were in the Greek city states where newly wealthy commercial layers found it necessary to appeal for support from plebian layers in the city and countryside in their struggle against the old landlord aristocracy. The book develops this point in its extensive review of the failure of democracy in the Roman Empire, the democracy of the medieval communes, and the rich history of the bourgeois revolutions in Holland, England, France, and the U.S.

His explanation of the achievements and limitations of the first American Revolution and how it took a second revolutionary struggle against slavery to complete the work begun in 1776 is alone worth the modest price of this book.

Novack details how democracy has been a useful form of rule for the handful of capitalist families whose interests are actually what is defended by the bourgeois state. By disguising their plutocratic rule, democracy as we know it, has helped the capitalists to stabilize their rule and deflect the class struggle it engenders into the safe channels of a two-party system designed to defend the interests only of the exploiters.

But Democracy and Revolution demonstrates (with examples from the Spanish civil war, and Italian and German fascism) how these stable forms can and have-and most importantly, will again-break down in times of capitalist crisis. Novack discusses Bonapartism, military dictatorship, and fascism as other, inevitable governmental forms that accompany capitalist rule as it enters a period of crisis and decay.

Anyone reading this part of the book will recognize its direct importance for understanding political developments today in all the advanced capitalist countries.

Novack concludes with a rich discussion of the challenges facing working people when we actually made revolutions that expanded democracy from the political to the social and economic sphere through the conquest of state power-first in the Soviet Union, and later in China, Vietnam, Eastern Europe, and Cuba. He discusses the rise of bureaucracies that carried out political counterrevolutions in all those countries but Cuba. And he demolishes the cynical argument that this proves the inherent utopianism of the struggle for socialism.

Democracy and Revolution leaves you convinced of the need to remain vigilant in defense of the democratic rights workers and farmers have won over centuries through revolutionary struggle. But more importantly, it opens your thinking on how these rights will only be defended and expanded and secured by successful revolutionary battles for working-class power against the minority of capitalist exploiters.

The book's footnotes, bibliography, and index are useful enhancements.

Democracy came to ancient Greece, as it did later to other parts of the world, through sharp and prolonged conflicts between contending social classes, George Novack explains. "It was everywhere the offspring of revolution."
Novack traces the evolution of democracy-its limitations and advances in various forms of class society-from its roots in the mercantile city-states of ancient Greece through its rise and decline under modern capitalism.
He discusses the emergence of Bonapartism, military dictatorship, and fascism; highlights the fight of working people to defend and extend democratic rights; and explains how democracy will be advanced under a workers' and farmers regime. (from the back cover)

Scholarly but not academic

I liked this book because it provides the answers to historical questions like:

Why did democracy develop in Greece and not in Asia?

Were there any democratic forms in the Middle ages?

What was the English Revolution?

Where do the democratic illusions of Americans come from?

It also makes a number of striking points. For example, the fact that the overthrow of Reconstruction was actually a reign of terror against Blacks. Plus the book makes the subject understandable from a working-class perspective and puts it in an easy-to-follow time line. Scholarly but not academic.

Thomas J. Watson Jr. joined IBM as a salesman in 1937, and rose to become president, CEO, and chairman of the board by the late 1950s.

A Purtian Classic; one of the best commentaries on the Beatitudes

This is simply one of the best commentaries on the Beatitudes. It is too bad a reprint of this book is not offered in hard-cover. True to the great Puritan tradition, Watson insightfully presents much truth to ponder.

If you like this book I also highly recommend Martin Lloyd-Jones' book "The Sermon on the Mount."

Watson's insight into the law versus gospel understanding is life changing. The book is fill of memorable quotes and a demonstration of the joy of being a Christian.

If you are like me, the idea of first reading the Puritans ...

If you are like me, the idea of first reading the Puritans can be daunting. Weren't they supposed to have been spiritual giants? Doesn't James Packer and Martyn Lloyd-Jones speak of them as God's giant redwood trees among the smaller trees in God's forest?
Who am I to approach a giant of the faith when I often feel like a dwarf or pygmy tree like a Japanese banzai tree than a strong, leafy tree in the yard?

C. S. Lewis disabused me from reading old books written by spiritual giants years ago. The reason why we should read older writers was because they knew our God deeply but they could also communicate deeply about knowing Him.

And few sub-groupings among Christians are more blessed than the Puritans, both in England and America.
In the ancient days before emails, phones, twitter and selfies and text messages, there was relative peace and quiet and time to think and meditate upon the great truths that God was teaching His people during the 17th century Puritan revival. Names like John Owen, Matthew Henry, John Bunyan, John Flavel, Matthew Poole, Richard Sibbes, and a galaxy of other Reformed luminaries graced the churches of England and its colony, America.

And few Puritans were more blessed and useful than Thomas Watson. The Banner of Truth is to be thanked for publishing most of the important works of Watson--THE BEATITUDES, THE LORD'S PRAYER, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, and a commentary on the Westminster Confession, A BODY OF DIVINITY.

Why is Watson a much read and much appreciated writer? He was biblical, warm, clear, full of metaphors and illustrations that stick in the mind, and thick with heart-tugging application. He could not be vague or boring if he tried. What's more, the great 19th century Baptist, Charles Spurgeon aided the modern rediscovery of Watson by himself editing of a couple of the volumes mentioned above. (I think I would be a much better writer if Charles Spurgeon was my editor!)

Like all the Puritans, Watson was not in a hurry. He wanted to do his best to master his subject and be mastered by it. So he takes no short cuts and rounds off no corners.He is thorough, and thoughtful and clear and biblical and takes the reader by the hand to make sure none of the message of God's Word can be missed if he can help it!

Let me whet your appetite by giving you a sample section--CHRISTIAN MEEKNESS under "Blessed are the meek...". In this section, Watson covers:
Meekness towards God and man
Meekness in the bearing of injuries
Meekness in the forgiving of injuries
Meekness in recompensing good for evil
Meekness shows the character of a true saint
Ten Reasons why Christians should be meek
How to attain the grace of meekness.

The Puritans understood that God had come to them in Christ and saved them to know Him deeply and make His glory visible in their generation. They pursued holiness and universal obedience; they were men of prayer; they studied and meditated upon their Bibles; they withstood persecution for the truth; they said Good-bye to their homes and livings when thrust out of the churches, they ministered when hirelings would leave the masses because of the black death that scourged 17th century Europe.

I enjoy reading them because like few others, they make me become more of a man of God. Too many of today's authors help me to become a boy of God, but few provoke me and teach me and entice me to become a man of God. All the Puritans provoke me to godliness and holiness. And I shall be eternally grateful.

Start out with the newly reprinted THE BEATITUDES (An Exposition of Matthew 5:1-10). After that try THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, then maybe THE LORD'S PRAYER. If you want to become a man or woman of God, you will not begrudge the effort expended in reading a Puritan and you certainly will not be disappointed with Thomas Watson.
