In my opinion, the most challenging aspect of teaching a graphic design course, particularly an introductory course, is a student's understanding of the "visual." Ms. Landa's text tackles this difficult task handily by offering straightforward solutions for building sound design fundamentals, and for thinking conceptually about those devices in our culture - human attitudes and visual identifiers - that marry an audience with the "visual." About the Author
Robin Landa holds the title of Distinguished Professor in the Robert Busch School of Design at Kean University of New Jersey. She is included among the teachers that the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching calls the "great teachers of our time." Most recently, Landa was a finalist in the WALL STREET JOURNAL's Creative Leaders competition. Professor Landa has won numerous awards for design, writing, and teaching, and is the author of 12 published books about graphic design, branding, advertising, and creativity, including GRAPHIC DESIGN SOLUTIONS (Wadsworth/Cengage), ADVERTISING BY DESIGN (John Wiley & Sons), and DESIGNING BRAND EXPERIENCES (Wadsworth/Cengage).

Great book for teaching design

I've used this book as the textbook for at least five Intro or Intermediate Graphic Design classes that I've taught over the past two years. It's by far the best basic overview design textbook that is currently available. And I've looked at dozens of other design books! I can't say enough good things about Landa's book - it covers all the basics in a way that is easy to understand, with many visuals to illustrate the concepts. It's well written, well illustrated, and well designed.

My only complaint is the high price - I sometimes teach at a community college, and the $100 price tag is definitely a challenge. I've had students drop the class because they couldn't afford the cost of the class AND the cost of the book.

Gorgeous textbook

This book is a most for a graphic design student. The design of the book itself is inspiring all on its own. I have never found myself admiring the beauty of a textbook of all things, but this one is a kind of masterpiece. Throw in the the actual you know...text and the excellent images and supplemental information and you have one of the best design books out there. Must have

Updated. Great pictures! Textbook reading!

I initially rated this book four starts, but after reading several chapters of the book, I have decided to change the rating to five stars. When I first looked at the book and started reading it, I thought it was boring and like an art history book. I couldn't have been more wrong. This book is a great resource for beginning graphic designers as it covers the technical considerations of graphic design. It is not the most exciting read, but the information is great. It covers such topics as typography, the graphic design process, composition, branding, corporate communication, etc.

The first half of the book starts off with the technical considerations (alignment, typographic size, color, etc.). What I like about this section is that it explains the reason behind why we should and shouldn't do things a certain way. The second half of the book

The second half of the book covers the application of the technical information we learned in the first half. Chapters 7-15 cover posters, package design, branding, corporate communication (i.e. brochures, annual reports, etc.), web design. I have not gotten to chapter 7 yet, but judging on the quality of the first five chapters, I expect the second half of the book to be just as beneficial as the first half.

What makes this book even better is that it is packed with examples of just about every topic covered. I enjoy looking at the examples just to help me see what professional graphic designers have done. Also, this book offers case studies, essays by graphic designers, and other side notes to help the graphic design student.

Overall, this is an excellent text for any graphic design student or someone interested in graphic design.

NOTE: Some reviews have mentioned an access card. I bought mine used. It did not come with an access code, but I didn't even know the book had an access code/web counter part until I read the post. The book is thorough and filled with excellent examples. I do not believe that the web access code is even necessary unless you are someone who prefers reading the textbook online, but otherwise, I say the companion access code is not essential. You can go to the publishers website and access some of their free resources like their flashcards and glossary here:

This small book covers a lot of material, getting the the essence of each topic and giving resources if you want to read further. I originally took it out of the library, but bought a copy because I wanted to read it from cover to cover and keep it in my library.

Not so good

This novel was not well organized. It was a struggle to finish. The characters are unappealing and the story repetitive. Poor editing, combined with a slow moving story contributes to unpleasant reading experience. It's not worth the $4.99 price. It's a shame there are so many 5 star review, as it's misleading. I'm wondering if we read the same book or if they read it, at all.

Waste of time and Money

I rarely post a review of a book that I have ordered. Some are very good, some not so great. It's the luck of the draw. But this one was so poorly written, that I felt it was my duty to make sure others had a heads up before buying it. Honestly, it is as if the writer had never taken an English class. There was so little punctuation that it was hard to figure out sometimes what she was even talking about. Also, I know this is an MC romance and the language is rough but almost every other word was sh** or fu**. Such lazy writing! Don't waste your time.

This was my first read by Jordan Silver and I had already been tipped off to the fact the most readers either love her or hate her, not a lot of in-between opinions. Make no mistake about it, this is erotica. If you're not looking to read that category, stay away. Don't expect a plot or intelligent character development. I had problems with the content in many areas, probably too many to list but I did like some things about her writing style and for me, the writing is what prevails. Ms. Silver probably won't become one of my faves but I'm going to give another book a try. The melodramatic nature of the content was a negative for me. Fantasy is great but I have to be able to buy into it and the biggest issue I absolutely must spend a moment addressing.

The anti-hero Creed is 6' 4" and in many instances it's stated that he's working with a 13 1/2" piece of equipment with a 4" girth. The heroine is 5' tall with a tiny petite frame. As a 5' 2" woman myself, if I place one end of a ruler on my business end, do you know where 12" inches hits? My heart! For most women in the world, huge is considered, I don't know...maybe 9"? The heroine Jesse is untried and happily takes to this length with no reservations. It's mentioned that he has to, "womb f---" her, as in her hoo-haa completely runs out of room. (Sorry for the immature language but I'm trying to fit with amazon rules here.) I'm glad I never met a man that would have to do that because I would have run screaming out of the room. Mention is made that sometimes he puts too much pressure on her organs during the act. I had to just suspend belief for this concept because in reality, she'd be hemorrhaging and bleeding out, ripped apart. I'm not even going to comment on all the piercings he had. If you fantasize about size, this is the book for you. There were other over the top aspects that I did overlook because I like the way she writes emotions and inner thoughts, although his went on too long especially in the beginning. He uses the f-bomb in every sentence during in his inner dialogue but that's how a poorly educated character such as this would probably think and it didn't detract from the storytelling for me. The author does write sex very well, no doubt about that. It's definitely DIFFERENT and that's why I'm willing to try a different book from this author.

About the Author
Erich Kolig is a former Senior Lecturer (Reader) in Social Anthropology at Otago University and Visiting Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Vienna University. He was also a Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia and a government anthropologist in Western Australia. Erich has done fieldwork in Afghanistan, Australia, Austria, Indonesia, New Zealand and Vanuatu. He has published several books (authored and edited) and many articles on Australian Aboriginal culture and religion, on indigenous politics in New Zealand, Vanuatu and Australia, on the historical exploration in New Zealand, and in more recent years on Muslims and Islam in New Zealand, radical Islam in Indonesia, Islamic law in Western liberal democracy and several other topics.

In this dense but intriguing scholarly miscellany, Spitz (Art and Psyche) muses on the absurd as manifested in Chekhov's play The Bear and in Freud's dissection of jokes; interprets Robert Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance as an avant-garde postmodernist work; and explores themes of nonconformity and rebellion in the film Dead Poets Society and in Calvin and Hobbes, a comic strip whose six-year-old protagonist creates a florid fantasy life with his toy tiger. In Sophocles's Antigone, Spitz finds an ethical imperative: conflicts in life must not be avoided. Her poignant concluding essay on Brundibar, a Czech children's opera that was performed many times by child inmates at the Nazis' Terezin concentration camp, illumines the power of art to inspire hope and a will to live. Spitz is at once a philosophical psychoanalyst and an eloquent poet. Captivated and marvelously inspired by the disjunctive visions of the surreal Magritte, she devotes nearly half these associatively written contemplations to the labyrinth that is his work. In her view, the suicide of Magritte's mother looms as the primary motivation for his "painted puzzles" and the source of his personal eccentricity. Spitz follows her meditations on Magritte with literate observations on snippets of drama, Hollywood film, and icons of popular culture. Writing across the disciplines, she discourses on absurdity and the joke and reviews Chekhov, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Dead Poets Society, and the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes. Richly informed...dazzling
