About the Author
Andrew J. Nelson is Assistant Professor of Management at the University of Oregon's Lundquist College of Business, where he teaches courses in strategy and entrepreneurship. He received his Ph.D. and B.A. degrees from Stanford University and his M.Sc. from Oxford University. Prior to joining the University of Oregon, he held the post of Lecturer in management science and engineering at Stanford University.  Dr. Nelson is well known for his research into university-based entrepreneurship

Richard C. Dorf is Professor of Electrical Engineering and Professor of Management at the University of California, Davis. He is author of Introduction to Electric Circuits (7th Ed.), Modern Control Systems (10th Ed.), Handbook of Electrical Engineering (3rd Ed.), Handbook of Engineering (2nd Ed.), and Handbook of Technology Management. He is the co-founder of six technology firms and was recently elected a Fellow Member in The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE)in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Society.

Tom Byers is Professor of Management Science and Engineering at Stanford University and founder of the Stanford Technology Ventures Program, which is dedicated to accelerating high-technology entrepreneurship education and creating scholarly research on technology-based firms. After receiving his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley, Tom spent over a decade in leadership positions in technology companies including Symantec Corporation. His teaching awards include Stanford's highest honor in 2005 and three national awards for entrepreneurship educators.

Expensive but very comprehensive

Technology Ventures is a book that I'll be keeping for a long time. It is a bit expensive (it's a text book, so this is not unexpected), but unlike many other books, you'll probably keep this one.

It covers the basics of launching a business, and it discusses legal issues, marketing, and HR in an engaging format.

Who should read this book:
If you have an academic background in technology, and want to launch a new business, this book will be perfect for you

Who should not read this book:
If you are looking for a quick, light read, this book will be too much for you. Also, if you're looking for information about social media marketing tactics, this book won't really help you

What I like about this book is that it really provides you with everything you need to know about launching a technology company. It covers everything, from the conception stage, to the legal issues. It is taught to Stanford students, and with good reason; its a very good book.

Buy this only if you have to

The title says it all - if it is a required book for your class then get it. I got this beginning of 2012 when I finishing my senior year in college. As an electrical engineering major, I referred to my textbooks a great deal. I actually kept most of my textbooks from undergrad (I may be a bit of a hoarder), but not this one. The reason was simple, I didn't find this book to be particularly useful. I took an entrepreneurship course that required this book. This book has very basic econ mixed in with real world examples. It will talk about strategies of a start-up business and then discuss how amazon/google/p&g/etc. do so well. Honestly it is like a blended in version of econ and wikipedia, so not so good.

I feel that most textbooks bought on this site are school related so you have to get it. But if there is a choice, I would go with a different book.

Layout is weird and text is hard to read

Well the layout is a little weird. Not like normal textbooks but it is broken up by main sections then by subsections and I honestly didn't read much more than the 3rd or 4th chapter because of the way it was written. The text is a light blue color which makes it somewhat hard to read for long periods of time. Starts to blend in with the white paper.

The content was dry and nothing I hadn't really learned in marketing or entrepreneurship classes.

EDIT: I guess the 4th edition had black ink. This review is for the 3rd addition.

Know it all for one test? Not so simple.

Being a master electrician isn’t a simple job. But when I need to know something, I have the resources to find out the answers. I even have people I can call for advice. As a master electrician, people expect ME to have all the answers and usually I do. When it came time for this test, I knew I would HAVE to know the answers. There would be no stalling around and there would be no one to help me. I was certainly willing to study. In order to make sure I Studied the right stuff, I got this study guide. It was a comprehensive guide made by a test preparation company that obviously did its research in test prep. It was not only affordable, but also effective. IT had all the info I needed in one location so I could study it at my leisure. Though I have to admit, I studied it all in a couple of long sessions. It broke things up so I could have studied it spread out as well. Knowing it all for a test is hard, but at least I had this study guide to help me organize everything I needed in one place.

Great for Strengthening Visual Processing and Memory

As a cognitive brain trainer, special educator and mom of a child with special needs, I know what its like to look for a targeted tool that is fun. We want to be able to let our kids enjoy learning. I use these cards with all the students that I work with for my in person programs. After telling parents about how much fun they can be my online program participants want them too. What I like about the cards is that they not only help to strengthen the visual skills of my students but they also teach alternative ways to solve/approach problems. For example, just from understanding what the cards are asking can be a challenge for kids who are taught the typical 1,2,3 step approach to tackling a problem. The cards are fun, do what they are supposed to do and as added bonus your child learns some neat little tricks along the way to solving puzzles that can be used in their academics. For students are really weak in visual skills, I often provide them with manipulatives to work through the problem at first then take them away. For example, when the cards ask your child to identify which patterns of cubes will form an open box ... if your child cannot visualize this yet, then using click together geometric shapes will be a blessing to form the foundational map inside their brain. From there you can try the problems that needed the manipulative over again after Box A is done. If your child whizzes through these you can also go through them again and challenge them on time to find the correct answer. There is a Box B to this set that you can purchase separately and I recommend using this to continue building upon the foundational strengths you established with your child in Box A. EDITH CHERRY, FAIA, is an Associate Professor and former Director of Architecture at the University of New Mexico. Her professional experience includes seven years spent at CRS (now HOK) and twenty-one years as a partner in her firm Cherry/See Architects.

A must read for every architectural office

Edith Cherry provides a very comprehensive overview of a subject that tends to be overlooked or neglected by many individuals in the architectural field. This is a must read for every architectural office regardless of office size or scale of work. Understanding and implementing Programming is an essential component in the architectural process that can not be overlooked.

Essential for the UNESCO-UIA's architectural education

In July 2002, UIA agreed to promote their criteria on Architectural Education, worldwide. Among various criteria, we can clearly find necessity of teaching the architectural programming in school. With understanding this situation, I can recommend this as the BEST TEXT BOOK among others in this field,
compulsory for students and educator.
