Definitive Work on one of History's Pivotal Battles

This is it! This is the book that should be in the library of every seriou student of the Indo-China War. While this book concerns itself with primarily one battle in the war that occupied France from 1946 through 1954, what a battle it was!
The Battle of Dien Bien Phu (March 13-May 8, 1954) was not as long as some, but it played such an important role in what was to follow that years after the fact, the name Dien Bien Phu is still met with equal amounts of disdain for French folly and admiration for the resolve of the Viet Minh, who ultimately defeated the best of the French Expeditionary Corps.
The late Bernard B. Fall has provided history students with a masterpiece of research, writing and scholarship. He first came to the attention of American military, political and diplomatic leaders in the early 1960s with his quintessential look at the French war effort in STREET WITHOUT JOY. He followed that success with HELL IN A VERY SMALL PLACE, which ironically was first released in early 1967, just weeks after the author was killed on Highway 1 (the old RC 1 - the Street Without Joy) while on patrol with United States Marines.
When the reader first opens this one volume history, he encounters the reasons for the French seizure of a valley 175 miles from their headquarters and main source of supply. The French High Command in Tonkin decided that controlling this valley would deny the Viet Minh access to the highlands of neighboring Laos and the mountain peoples who were more loyal to the French than they were to the Vietnamese.
After the airborne assault on the valley on 20 November 1953, the French consolidated their position and began to fortify the valley floor. A short time later, the field commander for Viet Minh forces, Vo Nguyen Giap decided that in order to ensure Viet Minh victory at the negotiating table, he must first inflict such a stunning defeat on French colonial forces that they will have no choice but to accede to Vietnamese nationalism and quit the "crown jewel" of their overseas empire.
Fall does an exceptionally fine job of describing French and Communist preparations for the cataclysmic battle. While he goes into great depth and technical detail, he never forgets that armies are composed of men and he also delivers to the reader all of the key French and Viet Minh personalities. There are the names good students of this battle all know: there are Giap and Ho Chi Minh, Henri Navarre and Rene Cogny; we get to meet and know Colonel (later Brigadier General) Ferdinand Marie de la Croix de Castries, the aristocratic cavalry officer who commands French forces at Dien Bien Phu (and who is so totally unsuitable for the job). There is the paratroop "mafia" of young airborne officers who effectively take control of the fortress (Langlais, Bigeard, Botella, Brechignac, de Seguin-Pazzis, et al) and hold the Viet Minh at bay for 57 days.
But the French Colonial Paratroops were not alone at Dien Bien Phu. There were also Foreign Legionnaires, Algerian and Moroccan rifles, Tunisians, Senegalese, Moroccan artillerymen, grounded air force pilots and maintenance crews, Vietnamese paratroopers and local mountain troops of the Red and White T'ai. Fall forgets nothing and leaves no one out. His detailed descriptions of the battles and the travails of the garrison are on a daily basis and no details are missed.
Fall wrote this book with the help of the French Ministry of Defense, the North Vietnamese and after thousands of interviews with survivors of the battle (French, Communist Viet Minh, Vietnamese nationalist troops, Legionaires and the junior officers who learned bitter lessons in Indo-China and later applied them as they later attempted to keep Algeria French).
This is a battle that has fascinated two generations of students and teachers alike. It is hard to imagine a better single volume discourse on the subject, especially as time moves us further away from the battle. It was a battle that changed the outcome of France's war and ultimately led to American involvement. For it was LBJ who denied the French the aerial assistance of the B-29 bombers at Clark Field in the Philippines and it was this same LBJ, who 11 years later committed American troops to the endless quagmire that ended his presidency and tore the United States apart.
As a primer for the later American involvement, this book is mandatory reading for if for no other reason, it lays out the roadmap of French defeat and the limitless hubris of the United States as it stepped into the breach and tried to do what France could not. This is "the" book on the subject and it explains in vivid detail how one of the most modern armies of Europe could lose to a guerrilla force. It is about arrogance and hubris and anti-colonialist national aspirations.
Although the main position at Dien Bien Phu fell on 7 May and Strongpoint Isabelle a day later on May 8th, France did not sign the Geneva Accords on Indo-China until July 22, 1954. As the Vietnamese saw the end of 85 years of colonial rule by Paris and as France pulled out in defeated shame, little did anyone know that the shadow of Dien Bien Phu would continue to haunt a world superpower for years to come.
If you are not a student of this battle, I still recommend this book, because it is a natural starting point for anyone interested in finding out how America became embroiled in its longest and most divisive war.

One Of the Best

If you have an interest in the history of the Vietnam War, or the Indochina War, then this is basically a must read, it will simply put the entire French war in Indochina in perspective for you (though I would also recommend you read "Street Without Joy"). As other reviewers have said, its almost appalling at the similarities between the French mistakes during their war in Indochina and the US's mistakes during its war, so much of it could have been avoided if the right people would have listened and done the proper background work on Vietnam. As far as the book goes, if you want to know something about the Battle of Dien Ben Phu, this book can tell you, it simply has everything, maps, strategies, the times and places that the individual attacks/counterattacks happened, absolutely everything. Yes, there are a lot of military terms and units that will be referenced in the book, but its still well worth the read. Also gives a nice buildup to the battle, as to what had been happening in the war up to that point, and why the French felt it necessary to take such a gamble behind enemy lines. Trust me, its a long book, but its all well worth it, and you will come away with a better understanding of how the French got there, and why we eventually took over after they pulled out. Its unfortunate that our men had to suffer or die needlessly because the right people didnt get their hands on some of the great books out of this era, things could have been a lot different, but hindsight is always 20-20.

SHOULD HAVE BEEN REQUIRED READING

I read this book while serving as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam in 1967. I found the book in a Special Services Library. My first thought was, "Has anyone in our government read this book?" My second thought was, "Why hasn't EVERY commander in Vietnam been required to read this book?"
There were so many parallels to so many situations I observed in Vietnam that it was incredible. Two that immediately came to mind were Khe Sanh and Dak To, both located in valleys surrounded by higher ground, safely accessible only by air and isolated from the nearest major support facilities.
We never benefitted from any of the lessons that the Viet Minh taught the French and we let the Viet Cong teach them to us all over again.
Bernard B. Fall wrote from the persective of a former member of the French military and continued to write throughout most of the American involvement. He died covering the war in Vietnam. Other books by Mr. Fall include: Vietnam Reader, Vietnam Witness, The Viet Minh Regime and Street Without Joy.

The book that sets the standard for everything to follow.

Every so often you chance upon a book that, even as someone who's read hundreds of books on the paranormal, really opens your eyes and makes you think. I'm jaded, I'll admit. I thought the Black Eyed Children were the result of an internet hoax that originated in the 1990's but Weatherly's book made me rethink all that. While a hoax is certainly still a possibility, the evidence here gives me pause.
Weatherly is a careful, thorough researcher who has compiled enough stories to suggest there may be something more than meets the eye going on with these mysteries entities and he lays out his findings and evidence with care.
The result a fascinating book that, if it doesn't convince you, will scare the daylights out of you. It's a remarkable subject and, after reading this book, one has to wonder if the Black Eyed Children aren't something real. In any case, this is the book all others will have to be judged by. Weatherly has set the bar very high. Oh, and you can buy it for $22 at his website [...]instead of paying these overblown prices.

my granddaughter's favorite

This book is so much fun to read, and it is also a counting book. My granddaughter wanted this read to her at bedtime whenever she stayed with us. When she learned to read, she would read it to me at bedtime, she's 16 now and still talks about reading this with me at bedtime when she was younger. Panda bears are one of her favorite animals so this is a great book for kids who like them. I have a grandniece who loves pandas so I bought this for her since she wasn't familiar with it. I hope she likes it as much as my granddaughter and I do. The book is paperback yet well constructed and easy to turn the pages for little fingers.

This is my all time favorite children's book! I have bought several as gifts and LOVE 'expressivly' reading to my grandkids, schoolwork classes and even bible classes! Love the message too... When I worked t Dell as a sales rep many years ago I sold a computer to this author. I was pregnant with my son at the time and Stephanie sent me an autographed copy of this book. It was my son's favorite book, I probably read it to him at least 200 times. I now purchase this book to give as a gift to any of my friends or family with a new baby on the way. Fantastic book!

About the Author

Susan Strauss is impassioned by language, literacy, imagery, and discourse. She has studied Spanish, French, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Amharic, German, Yiddish, and Quechua, and is fascinated by the ways in which these various systems of language combine to express tense and aspect, number, gender, shape, color, sensory perception, stance, opinion, affect, and emotion.

She teaches courses at Penn State in Discourse Analysis, Discourse Functional Grammar (English and other languages), Linguistic Anthropology, Second Language Writing, and Pedagogical Approaches to L2 Speaking/Listening.

Since 2012, she has been the mother of six school-aged children, all adopted from Ethiopia. Together they have been building foundations of literacy as "social cognition," foundations through which words and worlds connect to form new understandings about people and freedom, education and respect; about science, social studies, history, literature, and art.

She is currently working on a new book with Parastou Feiz, Cal State San Bernardino, and Xuehua Xiang, University of Illinois at Chicago, also to be published by Routledge, on the topic of discourse functional grammar. She is also authoring a book on her adoption story, detailing the institutional challenges of the adoption process itself and sharing the absolute joy, wonder, and awe of being a mother to six utterly amazing children.

Excellent Textbook

I recently used Strauss and Feiz (2014) in my discourse analysis class and enjoyed using it. What I liked the most about the book is its richly exemplified inductive approach, which worked well for my purpose of introducing students to discourse analysis both as an interdisciplinary field and as a research methodology/analytic lens. The book is also helpful with its coherent emphasis on the inseparability of meaning and form, and the indispensability of stance and perspective-taking in approaching discourse. With these themes coherently constructed in the book, students not only come to "know" about discourse analysis, but begin to view language beyond the surface, to analyze data, and to become intrigued in what discourse analysis can do and can discover.

The writing is thorough, insightful and relatable (with data excepts from children's books, radio news casts, extreme weather reports, pizza recipes and other such everyday, lively language occurrences).

Another major plus for this book is its organization and sequencing. This is the first book I have used without having to re-arrange its chapters to create better overall coherence, or skip chapters due to the bulk of materials. When teaching with this book, if one chapter doesn't get finished in its planned time, the discussions easily merge with the subsequent chapter.

The book comes with a very good set of suggested readings and a solid bibliography. A good portion of the article-length readings that I included for my students to read were selected from the "Suggestions for Further Reading" section of each chapter, which I found to be a carefully chosen collection that extend the discussion of the chapter or otherwise provide exemplary illustration of the use of DA to study diverse language phenomena.

What I learned from Success Made Simple

Things about business I learned from this book

1. Low personal expenses. It's easy to bootstrap a business without debt when your life is simple; you have few gadgets; and your entertainment is family, games and visiting friends.

2. A fear of God. This persuades away from idleness, and into productivity and investing in the good of others.

3. A commitment to excellent craftsmanship. It glorifies God to make a thing well. That alone motivates quality and a reputation for quality and service that can command premium prices.

4. God, family, community before business. Business is used to fulfill your calling to God, to family and to community. The American mantra assumes that business success is THE goal. The Amish don't see it that way.

The book is well written because Erik gets out of the way and let's the Amish speak for themselves.

Vivid Stories and Quality Business Lessons

Author Erik Wesner, who writes the excellent AmishAmerica blog, spent two years researching Amish businesses in Pennsylvania and Ohio. His new book, "Success Made Simple: An Inside Look at Why Amish Businesses Thrive" is the result.

By weaving together the Amish experience, common business knowledge, and ideas from mainstream business gurus, Wesner derives business lessons for the rest of us. As the title suggests, the Amish remind us that business doesn't have to be a complicated venture.

Here's a general summary of what's in each chapter:

Chapters 1 & 2: You learn about how the Amish use vision and faith to build successful firms. Next, Wesner explores how Amish people become successful with only an eighth-grade education, standard in the culture.

Chapter 3 describes the Amish approach to sales and marketing, which emphasizes relationship-building and customer service.

Chapter 4 dives more deeply into relationships and customer service. You also learn how the Amish tend their reputations and difficult clients.

Chapter 5 & 6 cover Amish approach to team-building, managing, and hiring. Many Amish people have to keep community interests at heart when hiring, firing, and motivating employees.

In Chapter 7, you learn how the Amish stay competitive. This includes how to compete in a friendly, sustainable way with others in your community--not something that's standard in so-called English (American) culture.

Wesner wraps up the book with the Amish definition of business and success, leading readers to ponder what community, success, and their overall goals mean to them.

Thoughts on style:

When I first started reading the book, I couldn't figure out whether Wesner was describing the Amish or imparting general business wisdom. He'd weave Amish tales, business expert quotes, and general business wisdom into the same section. After a little hesitation, however, the style grew on me. I ultimately saw it as unique and quite seamless.

If one thing about the book caught me off-guard, it was Wesner's gentle, respectful treatment of the Amish. Chock it up to bad media conditioning. I suppose I expect business books to dictate something to me, and this one didn't. It didn't assume wrong or right. It was respectful. (Hey, maybe we could use more of this.)

Wesner also has a knack for illustrating how the Amish operate in their day-to-day lives. His stories, anecdotes, quotes, and research made me feel like I knew the Amish. I could tell he spent a lot of time with them.

Thoughts on content:

If you read business books, you've probably already learned some of "Success Made Simple"'s business lessons, which cover general business topics like marketing and human resources. The lessons I found most useful, however, were those I hadn't heard before. These include how the Amish use faith as a catalyst for business motivation and success. Or how Amish treat competition when everyone's in the same community.

I was also fascinated to learn that the Amish don't go to court. That shines a new light on how to sift out and treat difficult customers without threatening them with legal action. These unique lessons, the ones you don't find everywhere else, made the book stand out.

Overall: A good read

"Success Made Simple" is one of those books everyone can benefit from. Its mellow style and interesting anecdotes make it a good commuting or poolside companion. I especially recommend this book for business students, anyone interested in general business lessons, or anyone interested in the Amish.

Outstanding book

Great read. I would recommend this book. Who knew there were so many successful Amish people? In a time after Enron, Lehman Bros., bank bailouts, etc. it is refreshing to be reminded that business can be both ethical and successful. This a great read for business people and entrepreneurs looking for strategies of success. It is also relevant to anyone looking for simplicity in their day to day lives. I even enjoyed learning about the Amish, a group I never really had an interest in. I have started keeping up with them through the author's blog [...]

This book is fantastic! The music sounds so beautiful. I played What Child is This? for our church's Christmas hymnsing and received many compliments. It is my favorite Christmas book!

Book has been reprinted! (2012) Dont pay more than $30

Lorie Line has published over 30 books of her piano music. This book is by far my favorite! The book has been out of print for a few years, as of the time that I am writing this review, there are a number of sellers who are offering this book for over $117.00 per copy! DONT PAY THAT PRICE! The book has been reprinted and is now available off of Lorie Line's own web site for $30 (lorieline.com) I believe the shipping is $6 plus an additional $1 for each additional book. (Not cheap shipping rates, but certainly better than paying $117 for one copy!) Dont know how long the supply of copies will last at Lori's web site, but this is really a GREAT book with timeless classics that are well arranged, and beautiful to play!
