The thing that I really like about this particular atlas is the thick somewhat slick paper binder-less presentation!

I love the way the slides are presented in this atlas, its an excellent micro slide representation that also has a nice concise explanation of each.

The thing that I really like about this particular atlas is the thick somewhat slick paper binder-less presentation. It allows me to put it into a loose leaf binder, which then allows me to open it up fully so that I don't have to fight a book binding while highlighting etc. Its great for laying out on the lab decks for better viewing!

This histology atlas was essential for me passing anatomy lab. The pictures were great, and I loved how they would show multiple pictures of certain slides. Some slides looked completely different based on the magnification. I never missed histology questions on my lab exams. I also loved how it had introductions to each system describing structure and function, as well as explanations under the pictures of the slides as well. A lot of times it was easier for me to find structure and function in my atlas than in my textbook. I had friends taking anatomy at other schools, and I would often send them pictures of my atlas to help them out. Definitely a great investment, and it helped me get that A.

Sometimes in class, I try to take photos of the specimens in the microscopes, and sometimes what I see in class may look a little different than what is on the exam. This is a great book to see a comparison so I can get a general idea of what something should look like. This helped a lot for Anatomy & Physiology.

Each archangel specializes in bringing peace to different types of human situations. After reading this book, I know that if I need help with physical health and wellness, travel, pets and/or children, I can call on Archangel Raphael.

The prayers alone are worth the price of the book. When I need help, knowing which angel to ask makes me feel more empowered. When praying for others' well being, there are specific approaches that make the prayer more effective, and this book covers that topic as well.

I found it to be very useful and practical information.

Doreen Virture presents an amazing awareness and understanding of Archangel Raphael in this book. Her writings and presentation include Raphael's attributes and our relationship with him. Doreen Virture includes many stories about interactions, healings, life altering episodes with many people and she includes the various ways and expectations of communicating with the Archangel. This book gives hope and paths to healing and choices in life. I'm still integrating this multifaceted information into my system and have gotten this book for others who, as I, fully appreciate this work and the knowledge within.

Wow!!! This is one of the best books I have ever read on the presence of God. LOVE IT !!! I felt my hunger rising for Jesus after each chapter. The best thing is it's so practical and that's what you need the simplicity that is in Jesus yet it had so much depth and deepeness of God. You will fall more in Love with Jesus as you read. I even teared up because it touched me right in my heart as I had been praying just days before the book came out about increasing my prayer life. I finished it in one night. Somewhat dated but with some gems inside

First of all, a review of this book cannot ignore the fact that it is published in a collection of "Lovecraft's library", so, independently of its intrinsic merits or flaws, most of its readers will be Lovecraft enthusiasts (or a least readers of weird fiction) interested in something that Lovecraft enjoyed and may have influenced him. If this is not the case, the appeal of M.P. Shiel's work may be harder to find, but still exists.

In fact, it could be argued that Shiel was a better writer than Lovecraft, or at least a better stylist. His profound knowledge of classical culture and his mastery of learned reference is obvious from the first lines. However, his retorical excesses and baroque style play against him and the average reader will be probably put off by some of the stories, specially the first one, "Xélucha". Actually, at some point Shiel himself seemed to realize this and, already a century ago when it still wouldn't seem so dated for so many people as it does now, decided to simplify his style and cut some of the verbosity of his prose, even going to the extreme of rewriting and streamlining stories already published.

This happened for example with the novel-lenght story that fills nearly two-thirds of this volume, "The Purple Cloud", but the editor has decided to include the older version because it was the one read and commented by Lovecraft. I don't know if this was a good idea, because I don't know the other version, but I guess that it is not. Of the nearly 200 pages, more than a quarter could probably be culled without the plot or literary merit suffering. The central part of the story is filled with repetitive descriptions, excesive wordiness and a plot that seems to go nowhere for dozens of pages, although the atmosphere and pathos are really haunting, and the first and last thirds did keep up my interest. A story difficult to forget once read for the atmosphere of sheer hopelessness and grandeur it transpires, but that gets really boring and long-winded in some parts. Overall, I doubt the theme has ever been dealt with with so much ambition and so much verbal excess.

The rest of the stories are much shorter (around ten pages mostly) and all fit loosely inside the weird fiction bag, although none of them (except the one that gives the book its title) will probably stick in memory very long, as I didn't find anything specially original about them. On the other hand, the author's style is always beautiful and evocative, and easier to digest in this shorter pieces.

The House of Sounds, one of Lovecrat's favorite stories, stands also above the rest, since it's a bit longer than the others (twenty pages) and is also quite atmospheric, although for all of Lovecraft's praise I wasn't so impressed with the plot, reminiscent of Poe's House of Usher. By the way, I have no doubt that Lovecraft found akin to his own some of the reflections at the beginning, about the Universe as a "Machine of Death". This is one of the stories that Shiel rewrote in a tighter style, and in this case the editor has provided the original version, called "Vaila", as an appendix (as a curiosity, a drawing of one of the characters is included).

As a final point: beware "Introductions" by S.T. Joshi in this or any other book edited by him (ditto with notes, though in this case there are none). They provide interesting commentary and details and place the work in context (mostly in relation to Lovecraft) but they are full of spoilers (including sometimes full summaries of the plot), so they really should be included as afterwords instead of introductions. By definition (and I don't say this only for Joshi's ones) an introduction should be a commentary that provides the context necessary to understand some work, specially when it is from other culture or time, not an analysis of it, that only makes sense when the work has been experienced (except for lazy students).

While I agree with the first reviewers account of the purple cloud only an idiot judges an anthology by just one of its stories The house of Sounds is a work of haunting art the other stories include Xelucha, The Pale Ape, The case of Euphemia Raphash, Huguenin's Wife, The Great King, The Bride, and of course the novel The Purple Cloud. enjoy may the nightmares kill you in your sleep:)

This is the definitive collection of MP Shiel's horror--a must have.

Shiel wrote some very good stuff,of which Lovecraft was influenced.The purplr cloud is a must read for students as well as horror collectors---way ahead of it's time.Unfortunatlely,M.P. Shiel didn't write many stories in this vein,but these few collected here by hippocampus press are real gems---it is easy to see why he was loved by lovecraft.

About the Author
Nathaniel Hawthorne (1805-64) was an American novelist and short-story writer. He was born in Salem, Massachusetts, and graduated from Bowdoin College. His first novel, Fanshawe, was published anonymously in 1828, followed by several collections of short stories, including Twice-Told Tales and Mosses from an Old Manse. His later novels include The Scarlet Letter, The House of Seven Gables, The Blithedale Romance, and The Marble Faun.

Newton Arvin (1900-63) was a literary critic and professor at Smith College known for his influential writings about nineteenth-century American literature. He is the author of biographies of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Walt Whitman, and his biography of Herman Melville won the National Book Award in 1951.

The Birthmark

In the latter part of the last century there lived a man of science, an eminent proficient in every branch of natural philosophy, who not long before our story opens had made experience of a spiritual affinity more attractive than any chemical one. He had left his laboratory to the care of an assistant, cleared his fine countenance from the furnace smoke, washed the stain of acids from his fingers, and persuaded a beautiful woman to become his wife. In those days when the comparatively recent discovery of electricity and other kindred mysteries of Nature seemed to open paths into the region of miracle, it was not unusual for the love of science to rival the love of woman in its depth and absorbing energy. The higher intellect, the imagination, the spirit, and even the heart might all find their congenial aliment in pursuits which, as some of their ardent votaries believed, would ascend from one step of powerful intelligence to another, until the philosopher should lay his hand on the secret of creative force and perhaps make new worlds for himself. We know not whether Aylmer possessed this degree of faith in man's ultimate control over Nature. He had devoted himself, however, too unreservedly to scientific studies ever to be weaned from them by any second passion. His love for his young wife might prove the stronger of the two; but it could only be by intertwining itself with his love of science, and uniting the strength of the latter to his own.

Such a union accordingly took place, and was attended with truly remarkable consequences and a deeply impressive moral. One day, very soon after their marriage, Aylmer sat gazing at his wife with a trouble in his countenance that grew stronger until he spoke.

"Georgiana," said he, "has it never occurred to you that the mark upon your cheek might be removed?"

"No, indeed," said she, smiling; but perceiving the seriousness of his manner, she blushed deeply. "To tell you the truth it has been so often called a charm that I was simple enough to imagine it might be so."

"Ah, upon another face it might," replied her husband; "but never on yours. No, dearest Georgiana, you came so nearly perfect from the hand of Nature that this slightest possible defect, which we hesitate whether to term a defect or a beauty, shocks me, as being the visible mark of earthly imperfection."

"Shocks you, my husband!" cried Georgiana, deeply hurt; at first reddening with momentary anger, but then bursting into tears. "Then why did you take me from my mother's side? You cannot love what shocks you!"

To explain this conversation it must be mentioned that in the centre of Georgiana's left cheek there was a singular mark, deeply interwoven, as it were, with the texture and substance of her face. In the usual state of her complexion — a healthy though delicate bloom — the mark wore a tint of deeper crimson, which imperfectly defined its shape amid the surrounding rosiness. When she blushed it gradually became more indistinct, and finally vanished amid the triumphant rush of blood that bathed the whole cheek with its brilliant glow. But if any shifting motion caused her to turn pale there was the mark again, a crimson stain upon the snow, in what Aylmer sometimes deemed an almost fearful distinctness. Its shape bore not a little similarity to the human hand, though of the smallest pygmy size. Georgiana's lovers were wont to say that some fairy at her birth hour had laid her tiny hand upon the infant's cheek, and left this impress there in token of of the magic endowments that were to give her such sway over all hearts. Many a desperate swain would have risked life for the privilege of pressing his lips to the mysterious hand. It must not be concealed, however, that the impression wrought by this fairy sign manual varied exceedingly, according to the difference of temperament of the beholders. Some fastidious persons — but they were exclusively of her own sex — affirmed that the bloody hand, as they chose to call it, quite destroyed the effect of Georgiana's beauty, and rendered her countenance even hideous. But it would be as reasonable to say that one of those small blue stains which sometimes occurred in the purest statuary marble would convert the Eve of Powers to a monster. Masculine observers, if the birthmark did not heighten their admiration, contented themselves with wishing it away, that the world might possess one living specimen of ideal loveliness without the semblance of a flaw. After his marriage, —for he thought little or nothing of the matter before,— Aylmer discovered that this was the case with himself.

Had she been less beautiful,—if Envy's self could have found aught else to sneer at,— he might have felt his affection heightened by the prettiness of this mimic hand, now vaguely portrayed, now lost, now stealing forth again and glimmering to and fro with every pulse of emotion that throbbed within her heart; but seeing her otherwise so perfect, he found this one defect grow more and more intolerable with every moment of their united lives. It was the fatal flaw of humanity which Nature, in one shape or another, stamps ineffaceably on all her productions, either to imply that they are temporary and finite, or that their perfection must be wrought by toil and pain. The crimson hand expressed the ineludible gripe in which mortality clutches the highest and purest of earthly mould, degrading them into kindred with the lowest, and even with the very brutes, like whom their visible frames return to dust. In this manner, selecting it as the symbol of his wife's liability to sin, sorrow, decay, and death, Aylmer's sombre imagination was not long in rendering the birthmark a frightful object, causing him more trouble and horror than ever Georgiana's beauty, whether of soul or sense, had given him delight.

Hawthorne must be read in his historical context

It's easy for our contemporaries to accuse Hawthorne of being formulaic or using timeworn themes. It must be remembered that in Hawthorne's own day, the many of the "timeworn" ideas represented a truly novel vision, and it was appropriate to use many different stories to convey its fullness. Just remember, if you think it's a "cliche," it's probably because you've read a lot of post-Hawthorne "wannabes"!

An insightful introduction to Keats

Keats is arguably the most likeable of the great English poets. It is not only the early death which halted the development of a talent often said only second to Shakespeare's in English poetry. It is the very difficult life, the being orphaned of both parents, the loss of his brother Tom to tuberculosis , his courage in dealing with so much suffering and tribulation. And along with this his generosity and sensitivity which friends like Gerald Clarke were so aware of. Keats is the thinking poet and as Walsh makes clear his enormous achievement in poetry is complemented by the achievement of his two- hundred and twenty letters. These letters to friends and family are essential to understanding Keat's poetic theory and thought about life. Walsh traces Keats' development, notes his moderation and sanity even in responding to criticism of early work such as 'Eudymion'. Walsh sees Keats as one of especially strong character, at the same time humble and determined .The great Odes are of course his supreme accomplishment and Walsh provides an analysis of them also.

This is a beautifully written introduction to one of the great poets of Mankind.

I purchased the Spectrum 13: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art for myself as a Christmas Gift.
I love this series and the package came in a timely manor. The Book was well packaged and not damaged at all (a plus with how things are thrown around now-a-days).
This Book is a collective of great fantasy art for the year it was published (2006). The series is still going and comes out every Christmas. I think this book, however, was cheaper because of getting it off Amazon vs. the local books stores near where I live.

one of the first of a new generation of books that shows modern contemporary fantasy art the 13th annual of a series already getting into its 20s a good investment especially if you could find a box load of the 15th edition which seems to be for some reason a under printed edition that no one can get in very people will sell you for $200 the year after it came out

But it's a good eye-opener and start for somebody who doesn't think they like art I use these books many times in the 90s to open the eyes of the people around me and to the world of fantasy in art that only I saw

Christmas and don't know what to get your son/daughter? get them one of these Spectrum books. If they Ooo and Ahh over it- you've got yourself a steady birthday/Christmas gift plan for the next 15 years. Just buy one every year.
