NICHOLAS R. COLISTO is Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Hovnanian Enterprises, Inc., a large national homebuilder. Disappointed, not really what I expected

The publishers describe this book as "a comprehensive guide to using Sing & See [with] explanation of the on-screen visual displays". Well, not really in my opinion. Of the 292 pages, only a short handful at the beginning describe the Sing&See software. And that description doesn't go beyond saying what you can see on the screen basically. Nothing technical. If you are looking for any kind of information specific to this software, for example, how to advise students about adjusting the voice in order to change the spectrograms, look elsewhere. You will not find it in this book. Definitely "look inside" to figure out whether you need what they offer.

About the Author

Kathy G. Short teaches graduate courses in children’s literature, inquiry, and curriculum at the University of Arizona and has taught elementary school in Indiana and Ohio. Her books include Creating Classrooms for Authors and Inquirers, Literature as a Way of Knowing, and Stories Matter: The Complexity of Cultural Authenticity. Kathy is director of Worlds of Words (www.wowlit.org), an initiative to encourage the use of literature to explore global cultures; she is on the 2014 Caldecott Committee; and is the Vice President of NCTE.

 

Carol Lynch-Brown taught graduate and undergraduate courses in children’s and young adult literature, reading, and language arts education at Florida State University. She was a teacher in elementary school and middle school in St. Paul and Minneapolis Public Schools, and taught English in French Public Schools. With Carl M. Tomlinson she co-authored Essentials of Young Adult Literature, 2/e, published by Pearson in 2010, and is a former editor of “The Reading Teacher,” a journal of the International Reading Association.

 

Carl M. Tomlinson taught graduate and undergraduate courses in children's literature and language arts at Northern Illinois University. He was an elementary and middle school teacher in Thomasville, Georgia public schools, and taught classes in English in Norway. He co-authored with Carol Lynch-Brown Essentials of Young Adult Literature, 2/e, published by Pearson in 2010, and is the editor of “Children's Books from Other Countries,” published by USBBY and Scarecrow Press in 1998.

Helps you hone your investing skills - must read

I learn by repetition, if I take a vacation, I sometimes have to go back and re-learn that which I thought was automatic before I left. Brad, besides talking about the selection process for new potential buys (which he keeps very simple like other reviewers have said) also discusses a daily routine, which he summarized into "20 Rules of Speculation." I found these to be very valuable.

This book helped me re-learn what William J. O'Neill discussed in "How To Make Money In Stocks." O'Neill talked about a prior run up, but I couldn't fully grasp it until I read Brad's book. Another valuable lesson for me was on p.93 where he discusses how to pyramid-add onto a position which is different from O'Neill's method. Essentially this "formula" allows Brad to exit a position without losing any money after he has already added to his initial buy.

Everything about this book is simple, and I think that's the beauty of it; I'm glad there was no fluff. I definitely recommend it, and like other's have said, think it is complimentary to O'Neill's "How To Make Money In Stocks," and Darvas' "How I Made $2,000,000 in The Stock Market."

A Hidden Gem

Before I downloaded this book onto my Kindle, I did read the same reviews you are reading now. I have an extensive library of investing books, have been investing for a very long time just like the others who highly rated this book, so I will save you some time when it comes to reading my review.

Pro's

Well written, easy to understand, includes chapter recaps; a must for me, gets to the point without all the fluff, such a relief. One of the best books I have ever,ever read in my 20 plus years of investing. I have ordered the hard copy just so I can lend it to friends who ask me how how I am able to make money in these so called crazy times!

Con's

Doubtful that someone who has not lost a significant amount of money in the markets, YET!, will GET IT!! let alone stick with the strict rules put forth so cleverly in this book.

Live and prosper by the rules, or go broke slapping on the snake-oil!

Unusual, Sound, and Simple Approach to the Stock Market

This is an excellent book on speculating in stocks, and very unusual. The author offers a simple and effective system based on trend following. Note that the title is about the “speculator” not the “trader” or “investor.” This book is not directed at day traders or “buy and hold” investors. Neither is it directed strictly to the swing or position trader. The expected holding periods are probably 4 to 8 months and much of the time you will be in cash. This makes it very good for beginners. Nevertheless, it should be useful for more experienced swing and position traders.

The author is known for his book on “The Perfect Stock” which was an analysis of the rise and fall of Taser Corp. stock. In this book, he seeks the principles of effective speculation from a rather reclusive and successful speculator who has a small privately circulated newsletter and is dying. He looks to the author here to succeed him. Thus, the book purports to recount a series of conversations with the “old” speculator showing his methods. This is an interesting, well-written, and easily read approach.

I won’t reveal the guts of the book, but the emphasis is on (1) simplicity, (2) being in sync with the market, (3) minimizing losses, and (4) using price-volume analysis free from consideration of news, opinions of others, or media personalities.

This system is about making lots of money step by step over a decade or so. The adrenaline junkie will NOT like this system. The approach is patient and dispassionate. There are long stretches where you are out of the market. You enter positions step by step. You don’t watch the market during the day, or even that much at night; depending mostly on your weekend studies and putting on trailing stops with each trade.

I have traded for many years now, with some success, and employ much of his approach, especially the focus on price-volume, sound businesses, and simplicity of approach. His system in a way reminds me of Nicolas Darvas (“How I made $2,000,000 in the Stock Market) meeting Jesse Livermore with a dash of William O’Neill. He uses something very similar to the Darvas breakout system on “leading” companies and, like Darvas, bails quickly on a position that goes down immediately. He believes you should make your own small index of leading companies to see the health and direction of the market – something Jesse Livermore did. William O’Neill of CANSLIM fame publishes the Investors’ Business Daily, a subscription to which makes this approach much easier than otherwise.

I really like the book and think anyone investing in common stocks should give it a read. However, I doubt many would adopt the approach since many traders and investors enjoy the emotional roller coaster and adrenaline more than just making a lot of money. While I also think watching the news is counterproductive to successful trading, I do think one should know some basics, like when earnings are coming out, since that is where big surprises tend to happen and call for extra caution. That said, most stock market traders and investors will find this an enjoyable and educational read.

In Daughter of Time, Tey focuses on the legend of Richard III, the evil hunchback of British history accused of murdering his young nephews. While at a London hospital recuperating from a fall, Inspector Alan Grant becomes fascinated by a portrait of King Richard. History Is Written By The Victors!

Scotland Yard Inspector Alan Grant is bored out of his mind. Due to an unfortunate fall and multiple injuries he is bed ridden in the hospital and the long healing process and subsequent inaction are driving him crazy. A friend, knowing of the Inspector's passion for faces, brings him a portfolio of historical portraits thinking to distract him. She hopes he will involve himself in solving a "classic" historical mystery, since he seems to know all the facts of the Scotland Yard cases by heart. Grant homes in on the portrait of King Richard III, the supposedly wicked uncle who murdered his nephews, the boy princes, in the London's Tower. He remembers how Richard was portrayed in elementary school history and certainly recalls Shakespeare's vivid portrait of the evil hunchbacked king. However, try as he may, Grant cannot reconcile the face in the painting with that of a tyrannical childrens' murderer and usurper of England's throne. He sees conscience and integrity in the face of the painting's subject. And his curiousity is aroused for the first time since his accident.
Grant asks for historical books and reads everything he can get his hands on. He finally comes into contact with a young research student from America who also becomes caught-up in the hypothesis that Richard III was framed. Author Josephine Tey, with the skill of the best in Scotland Yard, conducts an objective investigation of a centuries-old crime. She evenly portrays both side of the story, Richard III's and King Henry VII's (the other suspect), with all its twists and turns, reveals compelling evidence and comes to an amazing conclusion.
The reader is literally taken back in time to examine the accusations, testimonies and material relating to the death of Richard's brother, King Edward IV in 1483, the known history of his sons, Princes Edward and Richard after their father's death and their mysterious disappearance, the behavior of Edward's widow and children, including his eldest daughter Elizabeth, who becomes Henry's bride, Queen and mother to Henry VIII. Tey provides an extraordinarily well researched profile of Richard III, pieced together directly from historical documents, and another profile of Henry Tudor. The author also examines the 1934 exhumation of the two children who were first dug up in 1674. Motives are examined and finally, conclusions are drawn, proving, once again, that history is written by winners.
This is a riveting piece of detective history. Usually historians are detectives. In this case we are introduced to a detective who becomes a historian. Step-by-step, Grant plays out his theories according to evidence and comes up with logical deductions. One may already know what the conclusions are, but that is not the point of this mystery novel. The book provides the opportunity to go back in history and view a more three-dimensional side to well known characters, examine documents, and understand the rationale of those who lied or who closed their eyes to the truth. In this case, a mistrust of the official version of "the truth" brings the truth to light.
Alan Grant and the supporting cast of characters are wonderful, as is the witty dialogue. The young American, Brent Carradine, is hardworking and touching in his zeal to do something meaningful. This excellent mystery by Josephine Tey is a delight and a remarkably riveting read.

The Ricardian Argument, With Delightful Training Wheels

What thoughtful reader hasn't experienced Shakespeare's Richard III and wondered about the accuracy of the Bard's portrayal? Thus did Josephine Tey, near the close of her authorial career, delve into some of the lost nooks and crannies of English history in an effort to recover "the real Richard."
The well-known hurdle for all would-be Ricardians is, of course, the utter absence of source material contemporary to Richard's reign, and most of all anything that discusses the fate of the "princes in the Tower." All that is generally counted as "authoritative," it turns out, is the product of Tudor dynasty information factories. Tey, however, very likely had in her possession the writings of Sir Clements Markham, a late Victorian-era civil servant, whose careful revisionist argument is here unfolded in a lively, compelling narrative of incremental discovery.
Prompted by a reproduction of a famous portrait of Richard, Tey's laid-up sleuth, with the help of an American researcher, marshalls from his bed an archival assault on the estimable Sir Thomas More, Henry (the VII) Tudor, and the entire phalanx of worthies who have reported, for the last half a millennium, that Richard was the demonic crookback murderer of Shakespeare's characterization. Happily for us, there's more (sic) to the story than the traditional record, and those not already sucked into the revisionist Ricardian argument may very well be converted. Tey's engaging "fiction" is not only a great boon to all Ricardians--who, with Richard III Societies on both sides of the pond, must surely win hundreds if not thousands of new converts yearly as a result of this 50-year-old work--but the perfect place to begin your own exploration of this great historical proto-conspiracy.

The Mystery of History

Since the winner writes the history books, it's not surprising most people believe that Richard III was evil. According to Sir Thomas More and Shakespeare, he had various members of his family killed, including his poor little nephews, so that he could be king. It's important to remember that much of what we think we know about Richard was written during the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I -- who were on the throne as the direct result of the defeat of Richard. To justify the Tudors (Henry's father, I believe) seizing power, Richard had to be cast as the bad guy. We may never know what actually happened, but Josephine Tey presents a different look into history using actual letters and documents from that time. It all starts with a modern-day homicide detective who prides himself on being able to read faces. When he sees Richard's portrait (without knowing who it is), he doesn't pick it as the face of an evil murderer. I've seen Richard's portrait in the National Portrait Gallery in London -- and I think Tey's character, although fictional, may be on to something.
