Nice overview but lacks detail

"The Illustration Handbook" is an acceptable overview of illustation art over the past 150 years. About 250 artists from the U.S.A., U.K. and Europe are profiled . A number of these artists are better known for their fine art, such as Aubrey Beardsely, Alphonse Mucha, M.C. Escher, and Kathe Kollwitz, but because they also did book illustration and advertising art during their careers they are included here. However, in regard to content, don't expect much. The work of each artist is summarized in just a single paragraph and only one to six samples of their art work is provided. Unfortunately, the book is small (6" x 8") therefore, while decently reproduced, the artwork is too small to be useful to study detail or fully appreciate the artists' skills. The book originally published in 1990 has not been updated, so a number of artists listed as still living are now deceased. As noted the book is an acceptable introduction to the genre and artists; it introduced me to a number of U.K. and European illustrators with whom I was not aware. It is an OK book given the price, but anyone interested in illustration art would be better served by more comprehensive texts, such as Walt Reed's classic "The Illustrator in America: 1860-2000" and the recently published "Masters of American Illustration - 41 Illustrators and How They Worked" by Fred Taraba.

Great Book for the Whole Famly!

My kids love this wonderful book! The amazing stories, vignettes and photographs provide great fodder for family discussions. The book is also a great mix of very do-able, everyday activities and also some "bucket list" ideas for kids. This makes an awesome gift for kids and families alike!

Cool book for kids

This is a really cute book that gives kids some creative ideas to focus their time and energy. My 7yr old son insisted on making himself a grilled cheese sandwich for lunch after seeing it in the book, and next he wants to scramble an egg and frost a cake. It also helps them appreciate little experiences and accomplishments, such as reading a map. It's a great book that provides food for thought. We are online buying another copy for a birthday present right now. I hope his friend likes it as much as he does.

I love this book and have bought several copies as gifts for friends' kids and grandkids! The book has simple yet engaging activities for kids to do, and is written in a style that all ages can understand. The graphics add extra color and fun imagery for kids to enjoy. I especially like that this book invites readers to step away from technology and have some good old fashioned fun!

About the Author
Martin Williams is Emeritus Professor at the University of Adelaide, Australia. His particular contribution is the reconstruction of prehistoric environments, ranging from the habitats occupied by early hominids in the Afar Rift of Ethiopia to the Neolithic occupation in the Sahara and the Nile valley to the late Pleistocene wetlands in the arid Flinders Ranges of South Australia, using evidence from a wide variety of disciplines. He is a recipient of the Cuthbert Peek Medal from the Royal Geographical Society, the Sir Joseph Verco Medal from the Royal Society of South Australia, the Distinguished Geomorphologist Medal from the Australia and New Zealand Geomorphology Group, and the Farouk El Baz Award for Desert Research from the Geological Society of America. He is the author of more than two hundred research papers (twelve in Nature) and has edited or authored twelve books, including Landform Evolution in Australasia (with J. L. Davies, 1978), The Sahara and the Nile (with Hugues Faure, 1980), and Quaternary Environments (with David Dunkerley, Patrick De Deckker, Peter Kershaw and John Chappell; 1993, 1998).

The standard

This book is the standard by which other histories of Jazz are to be judged. The history is related without bias, but with flavor, both completely and with sufficient detail.
The history is presented with insight into the future implications each musical "invention" would bear on its progeny. You get the feeling that the authors were "there" when the music evolved, giving it a realistic and even authoritative feel. You trust this book.
This book complements Porter's "Jazz: its origins to the present" well, as it is often referenced in that book. It makes them an ideal pair. While the tone and emphasis are slightly different, the subject matter is the same, he rich and diverse history of jazz.
It is no wonder that other books on Jazz site this book as the definitive source on the subject. Thumbs up for a classic work.

The book cover is two women and Amazon had it listed when I queried lesbian BDSM. If you're into Het porn then you may enjoy this. It was too "The Secretary" for me. Age old story, girl meets boy, boy is kinky, boy shows girl kink, girl enjoys herself. This isn't how any relationship I've ebb very discussed started and it's not how I start mine. These stories are getting old.

There are many advantages to having a PHP certification program. Foremost, it allows employers, especially those of the non-technical kind, to set a certain standard for their PHP hiring decisions; they’ll know that people who are certified have passed a set of hurdles in earning their credentials and can clearly demonstrate their knowledge of PHP and its related technologies. Not only does that mean that a Zend Certified Engineer will automatically match such criteria and have an immediate advantage on the job market, but the certification process also allows for more and more enterprises to adopt PHP. This, in turn, will lead to a much more vibrant job market for PHP developers—making it easier to make a living from what PHP developers like doing most. I have no doubt that we will see an increase in the ongoing PHP proliferation due to the existence of Zend’s PHP Certification Exam. A few weeks ago, I finally found time to take the Zend PHP Certification Exam. Despite having written some of the questions and being part of the exam education advisory board that reviewed the questions a few months ago, I was surprised to realize that I was a tad bit tense—I think not only because exams in general tend to have this effect on me, but also because I remembered that the questions were very thorough, most probably due to the fact that the exam authors themselves are leaders in the PHP community who wanted to come up with the best possible questions. Without making the exam overly difficult, this ensured that every question was well-thought-out, thoroughly peer-reviewed and carefully constructed; this is bound to make any prospective exam-taker—especially one that was an integral part of such a thorough process—a bit nervous! I’m happy to say that I passed the exam—but I admit that some questions were quite hard. I think that, overall, the exam is fair but, unlike many other certification tests, much more thorough. A PHP developer with no experience really cannot pass this exam, which I think is great. It really certifies PHP developers who have experience in developing PHP based web applications in the real world. I believe this book will be of great help in preparing for the certification exam. Both Marco and John were on the Zend PHP Certification Advisory Board and understand the nature of the exam and what its goals are. Both authors also have many years of experience in PHP, which is readily recognizable from the book’s contents. This book very nicely covers the different topics on which you will be tested and provides questions that are very similar to the ones you will see on the exam. Having the answers at the end of each chapter will make it easy for you to validate your strengths and weaknesses. Almost Useless.

Almost useless. But at least it has sample questions. The book reads like a highschoolers notes. Just simple notes on the subject matter with no real explanation of it. Most of the sample questions are on the exceptions to how php works not how it usually functions. Then there is little to no explanation for the oddball results some of their sample code gets. Dont waste your money. Go buy a real php study guide or manual.

You need this, but you'll hate it too!

I just passed my Zend Certified Engineer test. It wasn't easy. For preparation, I used both the Official Zend Study Guide (by Zend Technologies) and this book. I often found myself frustrated by the numerous errata in both books, but there were significantly more mistakes in this book (ranging from having the wrong answer listed in the answers section to typos). The positive aspect of this is that it forced me to spend more time with the online php manual answering my questions. I found the questions on the actual exam to be more like those in this book, than from the Official Study Guide, but you really need the Official Study Guide to make some sense of the answers in here as well. There were questions in this book covering exam topics that wheren't covered in the Official Study Guide. That's reason enough to get it.

The print quality on the pages is sub-standard, but the questions and thorough answers were very helpful.

Simply put, I wouldn't have had any chance of passing the exam if it weren't for this practice test book, even though it's aggravating at times.

The previous reviewer was too generous. The numerous flaws in the book were so offputting that I finally gave up in disgust and discarded the book. One might expect that a book which asserts to prepare you for any exam would be proofread especially carefully. It appears that the only proofreading was just of simple grammar. Nothing on the logic or accuracy of what was actually written.

I strongly urge you to look for another text. Don't waste your time with this one.
