Outdated but important

While some of the methods described have faded out of sight (primal scream therapy, est, etc) this book is still a useful (and entertaining) tool in analyzing the continuing flim-flammery of popular psychology. While expressing sensitivity towards those seeking help with real emotional and mental difficulties, Rosen questions the power and effectiveness of pop psychologists and their painful, expensive, and often humiliating methods.

Although there ARE some sections that reveal nuances previously unknown or perhaps unappreciated... most of the book is taken up with the complaints of a ripped-off customer. Some of the chapters are humorous but was that why the book was purchased?

Very useful and insightful.

In the age of Dr. Phil, I'd love to hear Rosen's insights into what current psychobabble trends say about our current state of national mind. In the absence of an updated version, though, this classic is still well worth picking up. If you have friends in therapies similar to those covered here (such as Landmark Forum), this book will be a very useful tool for articulating your inevitable unease about their vague catchphrasology. Rosen's eloquently phrased conclusions are exemplary of his most compelling point, which is that only through the subtle complexity of real language can we reach real conclusions about our own self-perceptions.

Chock full of drama goodies

What Lajos Egri will show you:

* Formulate your premise. Premise is a statement, idea, or conviction that your story proves true. For example, the premise of Romeo and Juliet would be something like "Love defies even death."

* Choose a pivotal character who will force the conflict.

* Orchestrate the other characters. The unity of opposites must be binding. Polar opposites must form a dialectic which creates a unified tension.

* Be careful to select the correct point of attack. Every point of attack starts with conflict.

* There are several types of conflict, such as jumping conflict, but you only want rising or foreshadowing conflict.

* No conflict can rise without perpetual exposition, which is transition. For example, a character going about his daily life doesn't suddenly become a NAZI, it happens in gradual steps--transition.

* Rising conflict, the product of exposition and transition, will ensure growth.

* Characters must conflict--there must be some polarity.

* Crisis will lead to climax. Climax will lead to conclusion.

* Dialogue should come from the voice of the character, not the writer.

Many TV, film, and novel plots and characters lack compelling conflict. The characters are just floating by... until something big happens. Lajos Egri illustrates how to change all this.

Our Aristotle

Egri's work is the only contender that I know of to Aristotle's "Poetics" for a guide to what makes good writing Good. Throw in Joseph Campbell's "The Hero with A Thousand Faces" and you have a sort of holy trilogy and trinity for writers. I've looked at some writing computer programs (haven't bought any yet), and many of them use one, or all of these methods. As an aside, I'll also throw in Polti as a source for plot. Not because I think he's very good, but because he's popular.
In Egri's world, character is king. Each of the characters, he states, must have a driving reason to be on stage, and their reasons must be diametrically opposed. In other words, they can't all get what they want - for one person to get what she wants, someone else must be deprived of their goal. Each character must also be desperate (desperate enough to be interesting) to get what he wants. (It's been a few years since I've read Egri, so please forgive my bad paraphrasing.)
Using many examples (some familiar, some unfamiliar) he gives you the tools to analyze plays (and all stories), and (therefore, hopefully) write plays, or stories, or novels, or movies... My girlfriend and I, even years after reading this book can't walk out of a movie theater or playhouse without analyzing it using the methods we learned from Egri.
If I were only able to reccomend one book to writers, this would be it. (Followed, of course, by Aristotle & Campbell). If I were to have all books erased from my memory and could only re-read one, this would be a strong contendor. If I could say only one thing to you, reader of this review, it would be read this book as soon as you can get your grubby hands on it.

I wish I had read this one first

Well, I read this book recently after reading god knows how many screenwriting books. Some of them are quite repetitive aren't they?! The thing that I've found is that there are a lot of books out there that explain the three-act structure by saying you have a set-up, then you have your turning points, your climax, your resolution blah blah blah. Thing is we all instinctively know we need this stuff in our plays and screenplays but what's hard as a writer is actually figuring out what these should be. What makes a good turning point, what makes a good resolution etc? If you want to find out, I strongly suggest you read this book.
I found this book (along with Robert McKee's 'Story') the most useful out of the many (screenwriting) books I've read because he gets into the nitty gritty hard stuff. He makes you think about how important the premise is. I disagree with some of the reviews of this book on this site that say that Egri says you have to know your premise from the outset, he doesn't say that, what he does say is that you have to know it clearly at some stage in writing your script and this is true because we go to films to find something out and all the pieces have to fit together or you'll say something like 'The second half of the movie dragged', 'Why did she do that? That wasn't in character' or 'The movie tried to prove too many points all at once' and so on.
The more I write scripts, the more I realise that it's all about planning and architecture because pacing is everything unlike novels etc.
In particular, the most useful takeout from this book is that your premise has to match your character and story. He goes into detail using 'A Doll's House' as an example. If Nora had been a different character, the resolution wouldn't have worked as well as it did and if the story happenings weren't chosen carefully based on her character, then the story wouldn't have rung true nor would we have understood what the premise is.
The other thing that I think you'll really like is the stuff on conflict, the different types of conflict and when to use a particular kind of conflict for the story you wish to tell.
I'm writing a script right now and this book encouraged me to be a bit more lateral and let go of the ideas I already had because they may not be the right situation for my main character or the story as is might not be the best vehicle for arguing the premise I want to argue.
Brilliant stuff! Written so long ago yet still so relevant.

OMG what did I read?

So, I downloaded this because it was free. I love freebies, and even though they are always hit or miss, I usually end up with something somewhat enjoyable.
I also enjoy Menage stories, but this one was just... not hot at all.
This was just very badly written, the characters were so all over the place, I felt like I couldn't follow what was really going on, and then.... I just had to flounce. All I can say is location 178. Um, no.
It wasn't remotely sexy, seemed like the sex was so hurried and with no thought, and I just didn't like the direction the story took. They seemed like immature, vindictive and selfish people.
I think this is in serious need of editing, mostly. I think a thoughtful editor or beta reader could have prevented some of the major mistakes in this book.
At least it was free. That's about the best thing I can say about this one.

Stories written by Adriana Kraft are done with a twist on the usual plots that you find within the genre. In this m/f/f ménage, the twist is the women fall for each other and the man is left to wonder where he stands.

It all starts when Sarah and Adam meet again at their twenty-year reunion. After a night of passion, Adam flees home to his live-in lover, Maria. Sarah has lusted/loved Adam for so long, she's not giving him up this time. So, she follows him home. I loved when Sarah mistook Maria's position in Adam's household.

Adam doesn't want to upset the balance he has in his house, so he's going to push all of Sarah's sexual boundaries, thinking she'll get scared and run. But Sarah takes everything Adam throws at her and loves it. When Maria and Sarah take the plunge and get together sexually, they find themselves falling for each other.

Adam has to figure out his place in the women's lives or if he wants to share at all.

There are secondary characters from Sarah's past that show up to complicate everyone's life. All of the characters are well-written; the sex scenes are scorching hot. The story flowed along nice and easy to read. This is another great read from Adriana Kraft.

Hot and Steamy

Their twenty year class reunion leads Adam and Sarah to a dance around floor. Sexual tension was high between them which lead to a night of passion. When Adam leaves without saying goodbye Sarah decides to through caution to the wind and pay him a visit for more hot sex his live in girlfriend answers the door. Maria Ramirez is the super delight of this trio. At first Sarah thinks Maria is a maid and Maria strings Sarah along for a bit while at the same time becoming increasingly enamored with her. And then everything turned when Maria and Sarah finally got intimate together and then fell for one another. Of course like most men Adam is stubborn and did not want get with the program for all 3 of them together, so what do the 2 smart women do? They turn up the heat. Adam has a hard time come to terms with his feelings for both women he becomes jealous of their relationship and the fact that had a threesome with out him. The sex scenes were really good. This was a new author to me and I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was really surprised. I gave this book 4.5 stars and I would have given it 5 if the authors would have explained a little more why Adam was afraid of commitment and not wanting kids a little more. Really good F/F/M or F/M/F.

How to get to Carnegie ...no, that joke is way too old.

An invaluable book for all skill levels and any instrument. I only wish I had read this book before I settled into all of my bad practicing habits. Written simply and with humor, this is a terrific book that will turn your head around about practicing as it did mine. Take the drudgery out of your practice routines and make them fun and effective. If you apply the lessons served up here, you will become a better musician, guaranteed. If guitar is your instrument of choice, this book makes the perfect practical companion to the classic Zen Guitar by Phillip Suto.

Great Book!

This book was recommended on a guitar forum, so I gave it a look. I was a bit hesitant at first - with this many glowing reviews I've learned to be skeptical as many authors will plant 5 star reviews of their own book. I'm confident that's not the case here.

This is a good, easy read full of invaluable advice and tips to make your guitar practice more productive. While reading the book, I was constantly thinking to myself that these are really common-sense ideas to approach practice, yet I wasn't implementing any of this advice in my routine. My method of practicing has often been to turn the TV on and noodle away on the guitar. It was clear from the author's advice that I've been doing it wrong the whole time.

I'm the kind of the guy that doesn't believe anything anyone tells me without good reason and that's the great thing about this book. The author doesn't just say, "Do it this way," with no explanation. He says "Do it this way, and here's why..."

While there are many things to take away from this book, my biggest so far is to approach practice with a plan. Without a plan, you have no goals. And without goals, you're unlikely to achieve anything.

Now I'm confident that I can plan my practice more effectively and get a whole lot more out of it and achieve my goals.

I'm learning to play a musical instrument as an adult beginner and this book has made an extraordinary difference to the quality and effectiveness of my practice sessions. Most of what he says I knew, but knowing it and doing it are two different things. His description of the process and the nuts and bolts of learning music were revelatory.

Kate Fletcher is an Ecological Design Consultant whose clients include Marks and Spencer, TerraPlana, Clarks, People Tree, Intermediate Technology Development Group. She has a PhD (1999) from Chelsea College of Art & Design, The London Institute, for which she investigated the development of environmentally responsible design strategies in the UK Textile Industry.

About the Author
Charles Ksir received his bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin and his Ph.D. from Indiana University in Bloomington. Following his postdoctoral training in Neurobiology at the Worcester Foundation in Massachusetts, he began a 34-year career in teaching and research at the University of Wyoming, where he also served in a variety of administrative positions. Now a professor emeritus, he focuses his efforts on teaching and textbook writing. He has taught the psychology course Drugs and Behaviour to more than three thousand students since 1972 and has received several teaching awards.

Dr. Carl Hart is an Associate Professor in both the Departments of Psychiatry and Psychology at Columbia University and is also a Research Scientist in the Division of Substance Abuse at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. A major focus of Dr. Hart’s research is to understand the complex interactions between neurobiological and environmental factors that mediate and modulate the actions of drugs of abuse, including drug-taking behaviour and cognitive performance. Dr. Hart’s research has been supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse for the past several years. In addition to his substantial research responsibilities, Dr. Hart teaches an undergraduate Drugs and Behaviour course and was recently awarded Columbia University’s highest teaching award.

Nice and compact

Nice and compact. Had to get this for my addiction class. The chapters are nice and detailed and helped me get my homework and required reading done. Studying this textbook helped me ace my exams. I like that this textbook is smaller and lighter than normal textbooks. I wished all textbooks were this size.

The book is easy to read, well written, an excellent reference source of information on basic drug addiction, societal implications, and brief history of the development of drugs and pharmaceutical manufacturing, as well as drug regulation.

I had bought the 900-page "official" study guide when I took the exam several years ago. Not only is this study guide a fraction of the cost of the larger study guide, this study guide is much more focused and directly addresses the questions that were asked on the exam.

Excellent Study Guide for this Exam!

This study guide was very instrumental in helping me pass the CPHQ exam on my 1st attempt! It is easy to read and follow the concepts. Not only are the type of test question in the back of the book very close to the actual exam, the explanation for each answer helped to further clarify the concepts for me. Also has great test taking tips.

Practiced for 2 days and passed on the first try. Would recommend this book, but spend more than 2 days practicing!

The practice exam provided by the makers of the test provide the best examples of the kind of questions asked. This book is great at providing a great summary of what you need to learn. However, on how to apply the content, you'll want to think it through on your own or get other reinforcement data. YouTube may be a good alternative for this.

I used the online course the test makers created as well as this book. 1 day of studying with each for about 15 hours each day. Again, the material provided by the test makers was good at understanding how they ask the exam questions, and the book is a great summary of the information they expect you to know to answer the questions that they ask.
